    Thumbs up Best Song Ever?

One of them young punks (Seldon or Glademaster) already posted about this, but I think "Wings" by Josh Ritter might be one of the better songs ever. And by ever, I mean before, after but not during the reign of the Grateful Dead or Led Zeppelin because those guys are not mortal, no.

If that's the one near the beginning of Sinners with the refrain "It's my hooomme..." then I would agree that it is a mighty fine song. Josh Ritter is a great songwriter and I thank Sinners for bringing him to my attention.

How about Tear Stained Eye by SonVolt. I can listen to that song over and over and over. The Canadian Power Trio isn't bad but I would think that they would fall under the reign of the all mighty Led Zep.

Tear Stained Eye is on "Trace". The album starts off with "Windfall" which is also a great song. Trace was the first album that Jay Farrar put out after the breakup of Uncle Tupelo.

If you like singer/songwriters what about Dan Bern or Steve Earle? Also Steve Poltz.

    Thumbs up

I'm a big Grateful Dead fan, and "Box of Rain" is a pretty amazing song, at least to me.

Josh Ritter writes and sings amazing stuff, but you can't really call it the "best ever" as it has yet to stand the test of time. He is ranked high among my personal favorites though.

I think the normal best songs ever, like "Stairway to Heaven," "Hotel California," and "Freebird" are somewhat overrated. Freebird is a hell of a song, but the other two don't do much for me personally. How about three cheers for "Tuesday's Gone," my personal favorite Skynyrd song.

This would be a great thread if it got more hits.

way too tough to call the "best song of all time"....all subjective anyway...JR is cool, but not sure I would put him in the pantheon of greatest songs of all time.

Some of the greatest songs of all time IMHO (in no particular order):

"Baba O'Riley" & "My Generation" by the Who
"Ramble On" & "Babe, I'm Going to Leave You" by Zep
"Satisfaction", "Loving Cup", "Sympathy for the Devil" (and about 50 others) by the Stones
"London Calling" "Train in Vain" "Guns of Brixton" (and about 20 others) by the Clash

geez...too many to list right now....

    Exclamation

Hey...I love Helmet as much as the next guy. Meantime is a great album.

But COME ON, people! Get a hold of yourselves!

And Glademaster: Don't ever mention the Eagles or Skynrd in the same sentence as the Mighty Zep. You have much to learn about music and tallent if you think either of those two bands could pull their weight against Robert, Jimmy, JPJ and Bonzo!

I have nothing to contribute and have no idea where to start with picking the best song ever (other than I can't stand the vocals in Rush so that's out...), but you guys should keep listing things because you're giving me a nice playlist to listen to at work today...

By the way, I actually hate trying to do this sort of thing - it is impossible and I just end up thinking of more and more great music and have to add it to the bottom of the list
