I've skied Tryon several times in the spring. I've always accessed from Ebbett's Pass, as Tryon is the last summit on the ridge that runs south from the pass, creating the western side of Noble Canyon. Tryon sits just west of Noble Lake, toward the head of the canyon. It can be easily accessed from the PCT, which comes up and over the SE shoulder of Tryon before it heads down to Noble Lake. But that's quite a hike from the Highlands Lakes trailhead. There's a nice bowl on the Noble Lake side of the peak. Ran into a fellow from SLT yesterday on Hiram who said he and his buddies sled into Tryon all winter and really enjoy some chutes off it as well as the bowl. I didn't hike to Tryon this year, as I didn't expect to find much there given the winter we had. But I could be wrong about that.

So, we're counting Ebbetts Pass as part of Tahoe?

Me, Vets, and LongShortLong did a seriously proper patch skiing crusade yesterday atop and around Hiram Peak. We strolled out to the peak around 10:30 and hit up the saddle. It was sludgey. Then we skied down to a small frozen lake, hiked back over the ridge to the front side and snagged 7 more patches that ranged from soft serve to cream cheese to proper corn and cookie crisp. 8 hour tour all in all. Vets will no doubt have pix to post shortly.

As for Tryon Peak, I believe it's across the valley from Hiram and Folger, so it looks down on the valley (i.e. closer to the actual Ebbetts summit). At least that's what I was told by somebody who owns one of the cabins down in Tryon last season.

June 4th, 2012 @ approx 2:45 (give or take several minutes) it began snowing @ T/D in Truckee. Light, wet snow, but definitely snow. Slush is accumulating on the roof as I type. Sure it's coming down heavier at higher elevations.

It was dumping on the coast this morning. Like a proper small mid winter storm. Now the sun in breaking out and high pressure is blowing back in.

Went to the Giants game today with fellow maggot BS720. Misted a bit a couple times early in the game, but cleared up nicely by the 6th or 7th. Another skiing buddy had given us tickets in section 135 (left field line), but his wife who works at the stadium stopped by and gave us a pair of passes to get up to the club level. So we headed there around the 7th. Scored some good beer (thanks BS720) and Bob Euker seats in the front row.

Here's BS and his gimp leg propped up and enjoying some sunshine and the lovely Pac Bell Park view. This was BS' first visit to a Giants game.

"It's Snowing!" Pic from a week, or so, ago (Tioga Pass)

As I got rained on biking to work today, and as the shot from SB is kinda awesome, here's a week old pic of Snow that I just got sent today.

This is from the *surprise* storm at the beginning of the Memorial Day weekend
This is the ClusterFuk on Tioga Pass on the afternoon of Friday 5/25, heading to Mammy.

Man, I was so stoked when we first started driving into the falling snow.
But then we were stopped for hours. Then got to go. Then got stopped. Then got told to turn around and get the hell out of the Park. Impossible to find Lodging.
Thank the Goddess for TeleMike's boundless generosity!!!

TP did not re-open until Noon on the Saturday (we ended up going to Mammy via 88 & Monitor Pass).
(According to the Ch2 Weather Dude, it rained at this time last June, too)

Skied the Forrestdale patch Saturday. Pretty smooth. Road was in good shape.

Was camped at the creek. Turned the truck radio on late Sunday to catch the end of the Giants game. Headlights were on. Didn't notice. Had to walk out to Red Lake to find a nice SLT kid who drove me back for a jump. Thanks dude!

Anyone know if Woods Lake road off of HWY 88 is open? Definitely planning a Roundtop/Sisters mission one day this upcoming weekend.

hmmmm....so from what you are saying hope...., what i have always heard referred to as pass ridge by the sledskiers, which holds a bunch of short steep shots and is reached easily from the top of the pass, is actually part of tryon peak??? so by continuing to hike out that ridge instead of droppping the little shots that are usually full of shitty snow by the time the road is open, i would be atop tryon??? i gotta get a map

My flight from seattle to SFO was cancelled due to the rain--not like that's saying much, it was just a little drizzle (but I guess nobody knows how to handle the rain in the summertime). It's haat again though, so I can't imagine much is sticking up there for long..

This page says as of 5/25 it was still closed. There's a phone number you can call.

gimpy, Tryon is at the far end of that ridge running south (SE?) from the pass, PCT passes through on the far side of Tryon. Just hike south from the pass through a series of drainages til you come to the end of the ridge overlooking Noble Lake.

dont want to download something(google earth) on someone else's computer so not an option.

thanks hopeless... i have been on that ridge a bunch of times and never even realized that tryon was at the end.

ebbets is reopened and looked pretty white from afar today. i think tomorrow may be the day to tick tryon off the book and see what kinda new snow fell.

so what'd ya ski at the cp and how was it ???

don't have to download anything, it's maps.google.com which is just a web page as compared to google earth.
Clicking the link below will take you to a map of the tahoe area. there should be a little map box at the the top right. if you hover over it a terrain link should show up. then drag the map south and zoom in.

we skied down from the base of the couloirs. the lookers left was all old snow on the left with drifts on the right. the crescent looks more consistent, but the there was just a dusting over the ice in the beginning where it normally shows through. no sign of it pulling away yet.

I'd exercise some caution skiing Tryon - I've skied in the neigborhood (Ebbetts, Folger, and Hiram) the last three weekends. The base isn't that deep and some of the chokes we skied were getting pretty thin - this dusting could just barely cover up some obstacles. The terrain that has coverage also has smooth snow. I hope to post a TR as soon as I finish sorting through the 200+ photos we took this past weekend.

    Quick Vailwood update,

my buddy in the know just tipped me off that $5 million of capex will be shelled out this coming fiscal yr, so it would appear that any changes in the near future will be small scale.

In KW terms that's MASSIVE! But yeah, I agree that doesn't go far if you think about chairlifts, construction/remodel costs to the mountain village, or building out the current rebar forest sitting at the base of chair 11.
