I gotta agree with GT40, the whole bb denouement is the real show here.

Nice to get some turns in (even if it was before the pow fell) with SBDT and Mr and Ms Barnballs. I hope I can get up a couple more times before I leave.

Shit, I might have saw you guys at the top of face lift.. I thought one of the faces looked familiar and was just about to ask for change for a nickel.. Do you guys remember seeing a guy waiting next to you guys at the top of the lift, I was in a black north face jacket on Public Enemy's? I was waiting for my girl to strap up (boarder) and I kind slowly skied up backwards to whom I am guessing is ACE, and maybe SuPu??(wearing a blue jacket and maybe tan pants?) I kinda chased you guys for a second, down the back of face lift and then had to stop and wait for the girl..

    Anyone remember seeing me???

We saw a guy with Pubic Enemas at the base of 1 around noon on Saturday and called out "TICAL!!! TICAL!!!" but it must've been someone else.

I have a photo-slut orange jacket and black pants. Haus has photo-slut orange pants and a black jacket. Tuffy wears black nondescript clothes so he can go poaching.

Are you talking about Friday? I don't think Armchair was there when Punani was there. I do remember seeing a couple of dudes on PE's. Were you wearing a flappy-eared, kind of Russian looking hat? I think I remember a black jacket, but I ain't sure. BTW, how'd those PE's ski outside of the park? I'm thinking about picking up a pair.

Who said they were planning on being there Thanksgiving weekend? I'll just start a new thread.

I think I am talking about Saturday.. When Stump was open..

Anyways, I was wearing a grey beanie with a little mushroom on the side, with Oakley Wisdom Goggles.. My girl tho was wearing the type of beanie you describe, with a yellow and white jacket..

The PE's are awsome.. I really like em all over the mountain.. They dont carve as good as some skis, and its kinda hard to bust short quick turns on em.. But I dont think I would trade them for anything else right now.. Only thing I would consider would be maybe some Armadas or the TroubleMakers (Although my buddy who is a ski tech and really sick in the park and rides the TM, says he will never ski another Dynastar.. He says they are too flismy and have weak construction and he is only 150#'s)

About Thanksgiving I was thinking about heading up.. whats fucked up is that the Motel 6 in Mammoth is already all booked up for Thanksgiving and Christmas.. Since to stay anywhere else is like $160/night, I am considering hitting up Tahoe or maybe even Utah...

I hung around with phUnk too long

The orangey/red jacket has it's advantages- People mistake you for ski patrol from a distance so you can poach.

Stay in June Lake, the drive ain't that bad and it's a whole lot cheeper. Gull Lake Lodge is $79 a night and June Lake Motel is about the same. Or Lee Vining, 25 minutes north of Mammy at the Yosemite Gateway Motel for $49 a night.

Ahhhhh...... It's good to be back. Life seems normal again. The summer months typically consist of maintaining constant diversions to keep the mind and body occupied in an attempt to stave off the wanton jonesing for snow. Once Mammoth opens, life settles into the comforting 4 days work, drive up, 3 days skiing, and drive down routine that defines life from November until June or hopefully July, or even August. Sheebz left for Mammoth on Wednesday to prep the gear and get a jump on her yearly goal of 100 days. On Friday, I used various forms of transportation in the form of a truck, a train, a car, and an SUV to make my way up to Mammoth.

On Saturday it all started again right there at the bottom of chair 1 where I last clicked out 144 days ago. There were just too many familiar faces around to really get serious about logging vertical. The socializing did cut into the skiing in a big way, but hey, with the chance of snow in the forecast it was best to get it done and out of the way.

Hooked up with Tuffy, Haus, and Punani. We met these kooks last season during that infamous birthday weekend. Bullet, Huckster Tim, and Luv's Climax were also lurking around joining and leaving the group every now and then. I also met BarnBalls who has been around in various different incarnations on various different Mammoth related boards over the years. Just about the time when the energy levels began to drop, we gathered for a quick review of the safety guidelines while the snow that had started to fall increased in intensity. During that last hour, it just clicked for me. The snow got soft and I had the 3 musketeers of Haus, Tuffy, and Punani to chase down the mountain. There were times when Punani would get so low while carving those huge turns he would disappear behind even the smallest rise in the terrain. Sheebz commented later that she skied up to every one of the musketeers at one point or another splayed out with their gear tossed around the hill in various configurations, stop, and say "so, what's going on here?"

The adrenalin got the best of me late Saturday to the point where Sunday became a bit of a rest and recovery day. With only chair 1 and chair 2 open as the storm passed through the choices were somewhat limited. Not one to waste time, we stocked up on the socializing points and proceeded to get really, really serious about making this a super safe season.

I am very fortunate to be in a situation where I can decide on a Sunday night that staying in Mammoth one more day would be so good for my mental heath that foregoing work is the only choice. So I did.

Last season, 2 of the mountains Avy guns were destroyed when the ammunition exploded inside the barrel. The new replacement guns were not working as expected resulting in an hour and a half delay in the opening of chair 1 and 2 while patrol threw hand charges. We spent the morning swinging by chair 3 each lap looking for signs of life. At noon we overheard a patrol radio announce, "center bowl is clear". We booked over to 3 and after a short 5 min wait we were on. It was short, but way sweet to get in a 5 turn run down an untracked center bowl the first time on it this season. The entire face of 3 was completely chewed by the 3rd run so we headed over via the high traverse to Scotty's and the 'noids. Coverage is decent if you stay in the gullies, but near the bottom it gets sketchy, so the speed must be held in check or serious injury could result.

Great kick off for the season, fresh snow, and new faces on the mountain. It looks to be a very entertaining year. The nickel change gang has added an entirely new dimension to our Mammoth experience. Sheebz and I are most definitely looking forward to Tahoe Summit 2004. Until then, we will continue the weekly Mammoth habit.

Oh yea, I want to thank ArmChairExtreme for the conditions reports posted throughout the season last year. Armed with the knowledge shared on the board, Sheebz and I scored some amazing runs in areas I would not have expected to have such great conditions. Hopefully, we can thank you in person before you head east.

Thanks for the nod, Carnivore. I am always really into people's TRs, so I try to copy the stuff I like. Nice to know it helped you out.

The next few weeks will be really busy for me, but I'm going to try to get up there whenever possible. I might go up Mon Tues.

    Thanks Tuffy.
You won't find any butt crack shots in my albums.
Oh wait, I meant no MALE butt crack shots in my albums.

As previously mentioned the top is expected to open Friday (11/14).

Be advised that there are lots of obstacles hiding right under the surface. A good buddy of mine dislocated his shoulder on Tuesday after hitting a rock hidden right under the surface while traveling at high speed. He used the high traverse from the back of chair 3 and was below Wipe Out 1.

Tical, Sheebz and I are up every weekend. We'll be looking for you.

Hey Carnivore! Good seeing you again. It was fun skiing with you, Sheebz and the whole pack.

Your Monday shots were insane. Maybe I'll see you this weekend, depending on the coin toss outcome
