    Crushed my talus need rec for doc in Denver

    Took a 20 footer to a ledge and shattered my talus yesterday evening. Need a rec for a good ortho/podiatrist in Denver. Anyone?

    I don't recommend this injury. At all.

    They can't get me in till wednesday. Should I wait for that or find someone else? The swelling has remained pretty constant, but I still have feeling in my toes, and ok capillary reaction.

    Son of a bitch! 9 screws, a plate, a drain, oxycontin, oxycdone, dilotted, and some others. It hurts. Sounds like 3 months till I'm weight bearing. Doc says it will be stiff forever, but that as long as I don't plan on taking up running I'll be back to all my other joys(pains) soon enough. Long road.

    Good luck with that. It was not an open fracture, was it?

    No fortunately it wasn't. Got a new boot today which is removable, which significantly improves my sanity, and the stitches removed. 6 weeks till weight bearing and however long for rehab.

    Two big scars about 5 inches long on each side of my ankle for the ladies.

    Also I think it may be 10 screws, its hard to count when they are stacked up like that.

    sorry to read this, yeah, i am sure the road to recovery seems very long , but you will complete the journey. i am looking forward to more (non gimp) trs from you in the future!

    ROM is coming around, and the foot seems to be about normal in size. Getting all sorts of little jolts of pain. Walk in 5 weeks, lots of rehab.

    Still going nuts. Now I'm getting fat from not doing anything but still having an appetite of doing things. It's hard to go from hiking a few thousand vertical a weekend to nothing at all for a month now. /bitching

    ^^^ We have all been there, but i will say that i would take my back injury over a lower extrmemity injury like that.
    Just hit the rehab hard but dont come back to early.
    And be thankful, it could be worse. I had a friend with an open fracture of his Talus and after 18 months , 8 surgery and staph, he had a BK (below the knee) amputation.

    Am I the only person who got incredibly introspective after a major injury? This sucks. I'm pissed, and my favorite coping mechanism, physical beat downs, are taken from me. I don't use alcohol/drugs as coping mechanisms, so that doesn't work. Two weeks till I get my next update from the doc. Hoping to start PT then. /sweet blog /first world problems.

    I played lots of guitar and video games when I was down this winter and spring. I hear ya on losing your favorite coping mechs, I don't have many other ones either. Eat healthy, think positive, and try not to stay up till 4:00 am playing video games if you go that route.

    Doc said he see's "Hawkins Sign" which is a sign that re-vascularization is happening. So that's good. I'm hobbling around now with no crutches, getting back on my feet is amazing. Driving again finally. Doc also said the cartilage wasn't as bad as he expected, though there is definitely still damage. Basically there is a big divot in the talar dome where my tibia impacted the cartilage. Overall a good report from the doc. He did say that he felt the best rehab was generally riding a bike. So I'm on an exercise bike for a month then checking on it and looking at the possibility of P/T after that. He said two months till full on green light.

    Ski season is saved.

    I'm going to be king meadow skipper this year, and I can't wait.

    I was in the same boat as you about 5 years ago, and then again 2 years ago. First time was a cute 5 footer onto a hidden rock, second was a motorbike wreck in Asia. Currently have 2 screws and 1/2 of somebody else's talus holding my ankle together.

    Definitely feel ya on the being useless front, but words of wisdom from somebody who's been there: DON'T force or shorten your rehab & Recovery. PT length & quality is pretty much what determines how much function you get back and whether the joint ever gives you grief again (Trauma to a joint is one of the top causes of osteoarthritis down the line, but I'm sure you know that).

    When it is time to start PT, make sure you find someone who'll go through the trouble of getting a hold of your records & imaging to get an idea of what exactly they're dealing with. Oh, and make sure you let them know what kind of an activity level you're used to, and what your goal level of function is. Really makes all the difference.

    It's been 3 days since i touched crutches. Hell. yeah.

    It all seems to be moving in a positive direction.
