    Question Ironic?

That I've been praying for it to get cold and then as soon as it does my furnace stops functioning?

Nothing like developing a layering scheme for staying inside...

I think it's safe to say that you have a better grasp of irony than a certain Ms. Morrisette.

You mean having 10,000 spoons when all you need is a knife isn't the definitive example of irony??

That song was fodder for so many great stand-up routines. One of my favourites went something like "' It's like rain on your wedding day.' That's not irony....unless you're a meterologist..."

Sick and ashamed and happy (and the sad thing is, that song is now in my head),

Sadly, I can think of at least 3 specific moments when I have sat around with some people and that topic came up (guess it was pretty dead at the bar)... and we picked it apart over and over and over again.

    Guess we weren't alone.

Just spoke to the furnace guy... part arrives tomorrow from Texas. Why would Texas of all places have parts for my furnace? I can see maybe them having parts for my air conditioner...

Same reason that freezing cold Syracuse NY is home to Carrier air conditioners.

    I know the feeling...

Yesterday the pilot light went out in our furnace. I was alerted to this fact by the 60 degree temperature in the house. Which in itself is kinda weird, if it was summer I'd be loving the temperature, as it is winter we were freezing.

So, I venture down to the basement, blow the dust off some directions and light the pilot light again. I give Julie the holler to upstairs "ok, turn it on", wella, we have heat again. The house quickly warms up to temperature.

Just to add some spice to the story it did rather scare me when the gas kicked on and the burners lit. I about crapped my pants, not ashamed to admit it. I had my face peering into the furnace control area, attempting to figure out just how it all works, when WOOF! Heh.

Anyways, this morning we wake up and the house is sub 60 once again. I'm through screwing with the furnace, I tell the wife to call someone to come fix it.

So, there I was at work, working away. Suddenly I get a call. It seems the furnace needs a 300 dollar tune up/who knows what. And while there they noticed the water heater was about to rust out. The wife informs me it'll be 850 dollars to fix both of these problems. As I'm at work struggling to fix cars I tell her whatever, just get it fixed.

I arrive home to find a new water heater, a furnace that works, and an 1157 dollar bill already paid. It seems we needed to re-pipe the vent and gas lines as they weren't to "code." Now I'll admit it is all different, but it really doesn't look that different. Mind you my house is less than 15 years old. They tried to sell the wife on a soft water set-up as well, luckily she passed on that.

I'm thinking we might have been jobbed a bit. But, I'm really not that concerned. It all works, and my house is warm once again.

Uh, dude, you got hosed. I put a whole fucking furnace in my house 4 years ago for $400cdn. (I got it at cost and it was installed for beer and smot)

Yes, it sounds a little steep, but it sure beats waking up in the morning to a) a freezing house and b) ice cold water in the shower.

I've had to pay out so much in the last few months on home repair shit that your $1157 sounds like chump change.

You know BobMc, I just had some repairs done on my car not too long ago and while the mechanic was diagnosing the problem there were some other items that needed to be dealt with. Of course I had that usual feeling that the mechanic was giving me a line about how I should go ahead and fix everything now. Being a trusting person I thought "sure go ahead - I am sure you are acting in my best interest - you sincerely want to do what is right - I trust you."

Since I have skied with you before for a few hours I have no doubt that you are of the highest ethics and always do what is best for the customer, but you have to admit there is some irony when a mechanic feels like they may be getting taken advantage of. Good luck and I hope you get many years of maintenance free enjoyment out of your furnace and water heater.

Hey! That's no fair! When I skied with you I was a salesman. When I was a salesman those things were built from an ingot of steel, nothing goes wrong.

Now that I'm back being a lowly wrench turner, those things are pieces of shit, I'd replace that if I was you...

    Heh...

BobMC - Look at it this way:

$1100 is a LOT cheaper than having your water heater rust out and cause a multi-thousand dollar flood in your house. Yeah, the repair price might have been a little steep, but still a lot cheaper than a flood bill.

You might be thinking "But if my house flooded, my insurance would cover it". Well, your homeowner's insurance would have paid for the flood damage (if you have that special extra rider on your insurance that covers floods, otherwise insurance wouldn't pay a dime), but you'd end up paying it all back and then some in higher premiums. Also, filing a claim is a HUGE black mark against you and can get you dropped from your current insurance provider and incapable of getting insurance through anyone else.

Believe me, I know all this insurance crap from experience (sucks to be me).

Sounds like the repair was expensive, but well worth it.
Of all the muthafuckas on earth, you the muthafuckest.
