    Snowbasin BC Avalanches

Funky stuff going at/near the Basin this morning, maybe flykdog can elaborate, reports are coming in to our office of one slide (maybe in the b/c bordering the resort, it's not clear yet) with a guy buried this morning, he survived with broken ribs, and was flown out by lifeflight.

Then later in the AM, more stuff slid - at first glance everyone was accounted for, but right now they have a pretty big SAR going on, since one extra ski was discovered... ...and they have no idea where the other one is, or the person that may have been attached to it...

I know Stoy entertained himself yesterday with some slide activity. But he's safe and sound.

Yea, I was up there this morning and they shut down the tram and the noname gates maybe an hour after they'd been opened.

Watched two life flight helicopters buzz in and head up into the noname area... when I went to my car to leave I got these shots; one of the heli coming into the patrol station with a dangler, and the other of the second heli flying out (presumably with the guy dropped off by the first one). The remaining helicopter headed back up noname, stopping and almost landing and then going up further... not sure what that was about. I also saw an ABC News van arrive just as I left. Anyway, here are the photos:

Life Flight bringing in the first victim:

Second chopper leaves with the vicitm, headed towards SLC:

First LF crew heads slowly back up noname. Maybe they were pushed back by the wind but it kept looking like they were trying to land and then they'd head up further.

Based on where they came from with the survivor and where they headed back to afterward, it looks like the slide was just outside the ski area boundary. Considered calling flyk to ask about the operation but thought better of it... I'm sure he'll check in tonight.

They are still searching now, they say they're going to go until dark, then see if there are any cars left on the mountain that don't get moved, and narrow it down from there. the hope is, of course, that it's just a lost ski.

FYI It turns out the survivor from this morning has some pretty serious injuries, broken femurs, etc...but will recover...

Pretty crazy stuff. Hopefully it is just a lost ski. None of the poeple involved had beacons from what I heard from flyk.

Yep...knew that was going to happen today. Have the word out to see if I can get any beta from some hea

ds I know skiing out there today. Bummer...The first victim i've skied with a few times and ski a good amount with his buddies.

Unfortunately, i have also heard from some of those heads.." No need to worry, we ski it all the time."

The slide I got caught in yesterday was in the same area. Look at the chopper in the third pic and look lookers right to the next drainage, which also leads into Hells. Thats where the deposition zone was. If you see where the chute bottlenecks, thats where I was pointing it to get up to skier left and into the trees, which are on a spine. The slide broke above the bottleneck at the open face, far above me.

The slide started at the top of Hell's canyon (ob) in a chute we call lust. A group of five were skiing when it ripped, three skied out the side, two got caught. The slide carried the two victims for 1800 vertical feet. For those familiar with the no-name area thats almost top to bottom. Both were buried, niether had beacons, thier "friends" had no rescue gear. Both victims freed themselves (amazing) one had some serious injuries; pelvis, femur, ribs, and head. The rest of the group skied down to help/look around and while they were down there another group came in a set a slide off on top of them. They did have at least enough sense to drag the victims and get themselves behind a cliff and out of the way. The depo field was over 400 yards long and 20+ feet deep.

This is a huge slide path, I'll look for pics later, must eat and sleep now.

So nobody dead? That's a relief, but they were morons for heading OB without gear. I bet that was quite a headache for you and the rest of patrol today, eh? Thanks for the report.

oh, and about the single ski that turned up, they took three dogs through the depo zone and no scent was picked up. Unless somebody turns up missing in the next few days it was probably one of the group that started the second slide and took off thinking they were in trouble.

If its the one I am thinking of, it slid yesterday as well. But from lower down. I know of some heads that wnated to drop the cliff towards the top of lust today.

Wasn't that group because they carry gear. Thats a big fukker though. Know how big the crown was?

Yeah, it was, but the morning started out so well that it evens out. If I see a million more sunrises, todays will still be memorable. No wind, perfect light, sweet pow, first tracks for 3 2500 vert ft runs.

Yeah, sounds like a nice start to the day. I helped my dad with yardwork wearing shorts and a t-shirt. 65 degrees here today with rain in the forecast and I'm supposed to have a race Wednesday, ha!

Mmm, 2500+ vertical foot powder runs.
