    1. Search. Plenty of good info on here.

I just got my 7 yr old nephew on a 6'+ used foam surf board today for the first time in small conditions in Maine. huge advantage was he could get pushed into the waves, stand up and ride the white water. If he fell (which he did not 5 waves in a row) the foam would not have hurt him. I suggest getting one of these. Costco has them for like $100. Seriously, it was perfect.

Get decent wetsuits off of Whiskey Militia. After Labor Day, things chill off on LI. You will want to surf at least through Halloween.

Get in the water often. Especially when there are no waves. Paddle around. Get used to the ocean. Get strong. Milk every tiny wave for all that it is worth. Have fun. I surfed knee high waves this morning with an old friend and had a blast. There is no such thing as too small to surf.

I drove by Bunger in Sayville yesterday, and they had a sign up for kids surf camps, if you're looking for that sort of thing.

Not much more to offer than this unless you want to do a surf camp for them. I've put both of my boys in surf camps every summer for at least one week. They have more fun learning from someone else and surfing with their friends. Then, when they go with me it's more about showing me what they've learned instead of me trying to teach them. I still give them pointers obviously but have figured out they do better with some instruction geared towards kids.

Foam boards are the best for them to learn on. The 8 footers from costco are OK but my youngest is small and it's tough for him to paddle. A smaller foam board would have been better.
