I'm currently running a 8.5"x2.5" rear shock, looking to upgrade to a Fox DHX air closest dimension is 8.75"x 2.5. Close enough?

Depends on the frame. It will change your geometry, making the BB higher and head angle steeper, if it even fits. On my frame o have 1/8" clearance with the stock shock length.

They make the DHX air in a 8.5 x 2.5 and the RS Vivid air as well.
a positive attitude will not solve all of your problems, but it may annoy enough people to make it worth the effort
