    computer nerds, I need guidance

trying to put a router on my cable modem so I can have 2 computers

I am sending/receiving packets according to my LAN connection

And I get a vaild IP address. But my WAN setting stay at 0.0.0.0 and I can't access the internet when running through the router. With direct connect, I'm back online with no problems

Any ideas? I've released/renewed my ip address, but still nothing from my wan settings. Cant ping anything either.

thanks, a shiny new sliderule to whomever solves this....

You are getting a valid IP according to??? if you try to connect and do start/run/cmd/ipconfig are you getting an IP there?

You can access the internet with one computer but not the other?

What ports are on the router and what kind of router are you working with? Are you sure you are using the correct type of cables? What are you trying to ping to?
    thats new hampshire as fuck

I'm getting this info from the router settings, so I assume it's the router's

I'm online now (clearly) and getting a vailid IP from comcast. I believe when I'm hooked to the router, I get an IP of 191.162.1.100

When hooked to the router, neither PC will connect. Connected directly, I have no issues.

The router is a linksys 2.4 g router. The cables were one of my questions. Long story short, I just got a roommate and the cables are his. But he was using his at home with this router yesterday with the same equipment with no issues. Correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't a ((standard)) cable go orangewhite/orange greenwhite/blue bluewhite/green brownwite/brown? that's how the one I'm using is setup

    I'm pinging www.msn.com

    thanks guys!

I am limited in my knowledge on this, but could it be something with the firewall on the router? I had some similar problems a while back that a friend solved for me by modifyin the firewall.

Your router is not getting an IP from the modem. Make sure the cable going from the modem to the router is going into the "WAN" port on the router then make sure your WAN port is configured for "DHCP".

They are, I found those settings in the router properties

jpc- I was wondering if it was some kind of firewall issue too...unfortunatley, I know nothing about them

Power off everything. Give it a couple minutes, then power up the modem, router, and finally the computers. It sounds stupid, but I've had problems like you before and this has fixed it.

If you are running Norton Internet Security or the Windows XP firewall. These might conflict with the modems. Perhaps turning them off would at least allow you to see if this is the problem. Then you can work on the fix.

I had tried that, but not all at once

An IT friend of mine said that solved his problem. I'll try that later tonight, thanks!

Is the link light on your WAN port showing an established connection? A firewall on your computer will not affect the connection between the modem and router. You need to get that squared away before you look at anything else.

I suspect since your modem is meant to be connected directly to a computer and WAN ports are usually connected to other routers at the uplink or WAN port that you need a crossover cat5 cable or the WAN port may have a switch that says something like crossover on it that you can change to have the same effect.

Do you know why the default hardware address was not working?

I have had the same problem with my router/modem combo. Powering down the modem was always the solution for me as well.
