Random thoughts from a really good day
So my wife and I were up at whiteface today and Reliable Racing and some chick who does womens clinics were sponsoring a FREE demo with an entire armada of womens skis, and it took me literally 45 minutes of nagging my wife to get her to try ANYTHING. And from the looks of the racks she was probably one of about 5 skiers who was actually taking skis out. Thank god she finally broke down and agreed to try "just a pair for one run"
So I suggest that since she already had a pair of carvers why not take out something different, just to see if she liked it. So after getting signed up and handing over her CC, the tech hands her some Elan ski with a similar footprint to what she's already on now. After she trys unsucsessfully for about 5 minutes to coax the tech to try to get the hint that she really wanted more of a mid fat, I finally ski over and ask the tech, do you have the B2 W or something similar in a 160 figuring thats a pretty safe bet. Sure enough they're there, get em adjusted and off we go. Took two laps and as we're heading back to return the B2's she asks if she could try some more skis
. Get back and the stupid tech yells at her for taking to long, which was utterly ridiculous since we were gone no longer then 30 minutes and as I noted earlier there were a grand total of 5 women taking out skis so there were still plenty of skis availible to demo. Wife tells tech that she liked that ski and could she have something similar to it to compare. So as the tech is slowly combing the rack for skis like the B2 and pulling out more 68 mm carving boards I notice that hidden away in the back corner are a pair of 165 PR's and 3 pairs of Phat Luvs. It had been snowing all day and skier traffic had piled up the snow in spots. these are exactly the kind of condtions my wife HATES because she just can't change gears from ice to crud to pow fast enough and therefore gets thrown around and is generally miserable until she hits the lodge for the rest of the day. I had a feeling that one of these skis might be perfect for her and I'd been trying to talk her into getting a pair of fats anyway. SOOOOO I walk over to the women who's now pulled out the Volkl Energy Gamma thingy and ask can my wife take the PR's for a run?
Tech: Well they're kinda fat for the East
Me: We take some trips out west
Tech: 165 is kinda long for her since she's on 160's
Me: Don't you think that the center mount and twin tip would make it ski a little shorter then 165?(Really hinting that I know more about skis then her)
Tech: I don't know what about trying a pair of 151 1080's
Wife: Those are way too short
Tech: But they're pretty wide underfoot, you'd have a good time on them
Me(Very aggrivated and pointing at the Phat Luvs): The K2's then, I know they run 174-167-160-153 lengths, with similar dimentions to the PR's and they don't have a twin tip
Tech: Yes
Me: Can she take them out for a run
Tech(Looking at my wife): Well as long as she doesn't hit any rocks with them
At this point I'm thinking my life as I know it is over, since my wife didn't want to do this in the first place, now has had to stand watching me and the tech for 10 minutes, and I had totally killed what little chance I had at getting my wife on a fatter pair of boards. Finally she gets set up and up the lift we go. We head down the trail we'd been using for her other demo runs so she'd have a benchmark for comparison. The first thing I notice is I'm having trouble keeping up on my tele skis. At first I worry since my wife NEVER skis fast, she's the typical intermediate type female skier, so I'm thinking she's just trying to get this over with so she can start planing on different ways of exacting revenge for what I've put her through when she stops. I cautiously ski up to her and ask what she thinks of the skis. She flashes me the biggest smile ever giggles sheepishly and tells me she absolutely LOVES the skis. She takes two more runs on the PL's and I've never seen her ski so well. She even tried straighlining the bottom of the run
SO in short, I am now on a quest to find her a pair of Phat Luvs and surprise her with them because I know she was totally bummed in the car going home because she thinks that she'll never get a chance to get a pair because she's going back to school and money's going to be tight. Little does she know that I've already made some financial arrangmets that should enable her to have her very own pair of Phat Luv's before the season is over
For sure, you have to be lost to find a place that can't be found, elseways everyone would know where it was
