    Tahoe Forcast

Okay so I skied the left over packed out mank at Mt. Baker today. Needless to say I am craving some powder. In looking at the acuweather site it says Cali is going to get pounded tonight and tomorrow. Whats the deal is this one going to dump a few feet on Tahoe or what? Thinking of booking out of B-ham in the next few hours and heading down.

Here is what acuweather is showing.

NOAA is calling for 4-6 inches overnight with much more later this week. Seems like most of this first storm never really made it up to the mountains.
You see, in this world there's two kinds of people, my friend: Those with loaded guns and those who dig. You dig.

If i were you, I'd stay up there, we never get snow over New Years. The last three out of four New Year's days have totally not been in the top 10 of my life. This storm looks to be a weak one, no real significant snow forecasted.

Only crappy part is that I am supposed to fly back to crappy Ontario on Friday. Girlfriend will be supper pissed if I bail on NewYears. But if Urll brings the love it will be worth it. Should start looking into changing my plane ticket to fly home out of Reno instead of Seattle.

In Tacoma now grabbin gas and coffee, boring drive on the I-5 ahead of me tonight.

Is there an Abercrombie in South Lake? Last time I took off on a road trip I smoothed it all over with the girlfriend by picking something up from Abercrombie. Can't get in back in Canada, works like a charm on her

    4 feet on ice crust?

With this much snow in the forecast things sound great, but let's look at the reality. Everything (with the possible exception of mammoth) is covered in east-coast style ice. If the storm came in rainy and warm then turned cold we might stand a chance of getting some bonding. But with an artic low coming down this thing is going to be pretty cold and dry. I don't think it's going to stick. I hope I'm wrong.

everyone chill, this first wave of light snow (6-10 today - tonight) will make for some fun riding tomorrow. then the big one is coming, straight outta AK, and is going to deposit 3-5 feet of the fresh through Sat....Fri should be deep.

i too am worried about slides, etc as we are rocking an icy base at the moment....but with this much new snow forecast from now - next monday, at some point its gonna start to stick, and if you are patient, you shall be rewarded with a few powder days...whoo hoo...i am SOOOO ready to ski some fresh snow!

It started out as rain last night at my housein Truckee at ~6300....so it was at least warm enough to mlet a nd bond a little....up at 7500-800, now that's a different story. The sliding is gonna be EPIC, but 3-5 feet??? That covers all!

I think the next 24 hours (Tuesday and Tuesday night) are going to tell the tale. If it lays down 4" - 6" of fairly wet slop w/o heavy winds, it won't be as bad. I think it's a good thing that we're getting a little accumulation before the Big Motha' rolls in.
The really dangerous stuff is where that north and east facing rain crust developed (at around 8,000' in places on the south shore). Although, I've seen lots of areas, both higher and lower, that have a nice rounded or angular surface to it (and I don't mean surface hoar - although there are some reports of that too).
I'm with you Big Blue, lets hope Thursday's forecasted Big Momma is a classic "warm start / cold finish". But if it is a cold mofo......well I know of a few places that are always safe....

Just pulled into Redding for a bite to eat. Looks like the Shasta area pulled some snow out of this first hit. Most everything along I-5 was covered in snow from just north of Ashland to 15 miles from Redding.

Looks like I'll head straight down to SLT to hit up K-weed tomorrow.

How was it there today? The website says 8-10 last night.

    How was today?

Well, pretty much sucked. Dust on crust doesn't even begin to describe it. More like Mash Potatoes on Ice Moguls. Good times.

...but, at least were still skiing.

Excuse me sir, have you seen my El Nino? I seem to have misplaced it.

LONG RANGE DISCUSSION...OVER THE PAST THREE TO FOUR GFS ENSEMBLE
MODEL RUNS THE ENSEMBLE MEAN AND 500MB ANOMALIES HAVE BEGUN TO LOOK
VERY OMINOUS. THE PATTERN FOR DAY 10 THROUGH 14 IS SETTING UP FOR
WHAT MAYBE A POTENTIAL FLOOD SITUATION. THE LARGE UPPER RIDGE ALONG
140W IS FORECAST TO FURTHER RETROGRADE INTO THE BERING SEA. THE
UPPER LOW JUST NW OF THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS WILL BE FURTHER ENHANCED AS
THE UPPER RIDGE RETROGRADES AND THE WESTERLIES DROP UNDER THIS RIDGE
DEEPENING THE UPPER LOW NW OF HAWAII. THE PATTERN EVOLVES BY THE
WEEKEND OF JAN 8 TO A WARM SOUTHWEST FLOW FROM HAWAII INTO
CALIFORNIA. IT IS NOT UNUSUAL FOR THE CURRENT VERY COLD PATTERN
WITH DEEP GULF OF ALASKA LOWS DROPPING OFFSHORE OF CALIFORNIA TO
EVOLVE INTO THE ABOVE SCENARIO. IT IS TOO EARLY TO MAKE ANY
COMPARISONS TO PAST HISTORICAL CASES BUT THIS PATTERN SHOULD BE
WATCHED CLOSELY. THE GROUND WILL BE VERY SATURATED AND VERY LOW
ELEVATION SNOWS WILL EXIST IN THE SIERRA FROM THE STORMS OF THE NEXT
5 DAYS. IN ADDITION TO THIS THE MADDEN JULIAN OSCILLATION...WHICH HAS
BEEN NON-EXISTENT SINCE MID OCTOBER IS SHOWING SIGNS OF LIFE.
CONVECTION NEAR 120E IS INDICATIVE OF ITS RESURGENCE. IT IS ALSO TOO
EARLY TO TELL WHETHER THIS WILL EVOLVE INTO A FULL BLOWN MJO OR IS
SIMPLY A KELVIN TYPE WAVE ENHANCING THE TROPICAL CONVECTION IN THIS
AREA. SHOULD THE MJO BEGIN TO INCREASE THIS WOULD PROVIDE MORE
CREDENCE TO A POTENTIAL VERY WET PATTERN IN THE 10 DAY TIME FRAME.

    FKNA bring the pow pow.

Currtly light snow here at the Starbucks in South Lake. Gunna run a few errands then head out to Kirkwood for another night in the rented Subie. Kirkwood does allow overnight parking I hope? Oh well only one way to find out.

Where are you guys getting these forcasts from the NWS? Everytime I go there it's talking like a piddly little 4 inches, none of this feet stuff.

Edit - Nevermind, I found it under "Warnings/Hazards".
