Most recent example of Alta's "Pain Train" mentality run amock....

SO I was blessed once again to be able to ski with my dad on X-mas, a big deal to me after his stroke and considering he's 61..
We made some high speed groomer runs on a beautiful uncrowded day and all seemed right with the world...
Now some of y'all know my dad and know he is more a willis jeep than a tank like me and that he tracks his vertical per day bombing groomed cruisers.
He sksi fairly fast for his age, has fun,and quantitates it all, ususally logging 35-40 k a day and skiing 4-5 days a week.
little dood, volkl 5 stqrs helmet and a big smile.

So we are on the lift & he shares a story form Alta. Seems he was skiing down to Collins & a couple of bro bras ( his discription "ya know dressed like you, fat skis, cool goggles, helmets, but with those mouthgurads kids have now") shoulder past him in the line and tell him to
"watch where your going on th hill dood"
He replies " you were both behind me, if ya have a problem, slow down or get better"
and recieves a "fuck you " from both for free.....

wtf!>?!, my dad is in his 60's and likes to make gs to super g turns on groomers, and has been skiing alta ( wit a season pass) 20+ years. even has one of those "old local dood" or whatever patches on his old jacket he wears at Alta.
there are not many if any old time Alta folks that dont know and like him.
Shit I expect this garbage at Snowbird, but
what ever happened to having a good time at a laid back resort.....
    damn.

Respectfully, Woodsy, the Pain Train is not really like that. Xover may be over the top, but intentionally bumping people in line and being shitheads is not what the Pain Train is all about.

Glad you got to ski with your pops for X-mas. That's damn

As we discussed, Alta has so many transient ski bums that although it has more soul than anywhere, it also lacks some of the soul it once had.

Just one more example of a place becoming a victim of its own success (or bountiful snowfall totals in this case.)

Great skiing with you and hanging with you in Aspen - sorry I was so buzzed most of the time.

eloquent discription of wha I have been poorly atempting to verbalize for the last few years...

big word to that, and what the hell are you aplogizing for? So was I,
    its Aspen!

Sory I bailed on the dumps with you and rad, but early season snow, no breaky, & no contacts is exactly my recipe for disaster that bit me 2x in that fair town.

My Dad was hit by some yahoo last year near the top of stonecrusher. Some asshole shot through the trees at the top skier's left and barrelled blindly into my dad from behind at speed--pops was just skiing like always does, slow, carefully and steady down the fall line. To the guy's credit he did stop and attempt to help dad up and he apologized, but I might not have been so charitable if I were there. My dad has lumbar disc problems and he was on his back for a week recovering. Bums me out a little that people aren't more carefully in situations like that.
I must disagree slightly with you phUnk--the pain train thang may not be ABOUT being rude and knocking lesser skiers off the high T, but that is what sometimes happens and it definitely serves to intimidate, which I don't think is too cool. I know because I have knocked skiers off the traverse and although sometimes it is due to their gaperness, often if I really think about it, I was inconsiderate and scaring slower skiers needlessly. Of course, the pain train is only as bad as its least considerate member. Powder may be intoxicating, but it's no excuse for being an ass. Just because you're a gaper doesn't mean you ought to be in danger of being maimed on the hill.

    SLC Punk Parte Deux...

I think your Dad wrongly identified their mouthguards.... They were actually pacifiers in the mounths of some ravers who were all pilled up.

I later caught up with the same dudes and kicked their asses because of the loud trance music eminating outta their I Pod's....

I calls it like I sees it.
I gape and I like Alta. I was asked to come on the High T and said no way. Sorry Xover, but I heard you were on the mountain and I had no intention of getting bumped off and have to flail down somewhere I did not know.

Yes, the rep is there and it sucks. I would love to check out more of the mountain, but "in control but going too fast for other skiers or limited terrain" skiers I can do without while relearning to ski.

Thanks for stickin up for the smaller people, Mr. Dread.

Reminds me of when I wore chainmail under my jacket and an iron helmet with just a slit to peer out of to protect myself from the pain trainers. And the jousters. Damn that shit is heavy.

Buzz if you come back to alta, I'll be your blocka on the high T anyday.

    Natty Dread, High T Blocka!!!!

Surfing all day for binders, probe, shovel, skins, wide brakes..........smoke signals are out, hope to see a pigeon come back with some details.

Digging the ski thing WAY TOO MUCH, dare I say it, Fuck Snowboarding!

Want BC setup for alpine as well. Only so much molla to play with. Can only have one set up now so going for both.

    180 Chubbs
    Smoke out for Titanal3's
    Smoke out for fat brakes
Smoke out for DB Asccesion Skins
    Bought probe
Still looking for metal blade shovel
THEN I need the most important thing, Beacon (but have offers to lend one when needed for now)

[Disclaimer: Fuck Snowboarding is not a recognized saying on a pow day since I can't ski pow YET]

If you wanna ski great terrain at Alta without the craziness of the High-T, head to the Supreme lift. Great terrain and much less crowded. We spent a whole afternoon there, hardly scratched the surface and still had tons of fun. That sucks Woodsy, the Altatude has apparently taken a turn for the worse.

You shitting me? Shoot me your cell. Let me see what I can finagle.

Major issue, getting the binders and getting em on quick. For the MINI, Inspector Gadget hooked me up with some demos from REI. Chubbs not in working order right now.

Oh, yeah, I kinda suck too. Only was hitting the groomers there. I'll learn though.

PM sent--and I'm sure I have some skis you can use if you've got boots.
If it's not a full on pow day, I'll be your full time blocka bro. Even if it is, we'll have a little pow clinic after I've gotten my fix...

I wonder how new of a development this is though, perhaps its gotten worse though.
I do remember being buzzed, bumped, and sometimes plain ol' knocked off the High-T back when I was a 12 (that would be '92). The considerate ones shouted "on your left/right" about a second before they passed, which was enough warning generally.
The less considerate ones quickly learned that while they were much better skiers than a 12 year old gaper, this gaper grew up in NYC and not only knew more swear words than them, but was far more creative in their application.

The attitude at Alta gets me down a little on pow days. A little too aggro for my taste. I mean I'm excited it's gonna be deep too, but all the aggressiveness is over the top. Then again all the BC skiing I've been doing has noticeably mellowed me out. I wouldn't recommend the high-T to a gaper on a pow day, that's just the way it is. Shit talking and shoving on non pow days is taking the lameness to a whole new level. The crowd at Alta seems to me a little more new school and younger this year too, or is that just me?
