    ankle injury question

Somehow I banged my left ankle up last Sunday, didn't hurt while skiing but after getting home it was a bit swollen and pretty tender, no discoloration or anything...took 2 days for the swelling to go down...then I was out again Friday and after a couple hours I could feel it was swollen again, by the end of the day it was really tender everytime I flexed my left ankle. Anyone else ever had this? I've been skiing 20 years and never hurt an ankle. Just curious if anyone else has had this problem??

RICE and stay off it for 48 hours. If it continues to swell, doc time.

Had plenty of ankle crap. Need a brace?? Have a few dozen.

sounds like a sprain, but that is only one mans opinion

and once you hurt an ankle, they get hurt again easier, it sucks

I RICE'd it last week and plan to do the same this week, hopefully a good week off of it will fix it?? I was thinking a sprain too, feels like I just strained it really bad. I'll let you know on the brace if it keeps up, thanks much Buzz.

RICE is only useful right after the injury: its purpose is to keep the swelling down. After the swelling has stopped increasing, RICE actually slows your healing.

Think about it: how does tissue heal? Blood flow brings in oxygen and other good stuff and carries away the waste. The only time this is bad is when there are major swelling/hematomas growing, i.e. internal bleeding. RICE slows or stops the blood flow, which stops the bleeding, but it also stops the healing.

Anti-inflammatories are also counter-productive for ligament injuries. Inflammation is your body's healing response, not a sickness.

Here are a couple good articles (with citations):

take the above post, its links to "articles" and the info in those articles with a grain of salt, a big grain of salt. although that clinic is run by an MD, it is alternative medicine and the treatments suggested by that clinic are not generally accepted by mainstream medicine.

IMVHO, those two articles are 'infomercials'. Their arguments are based primarily on theory. It is quasi-medical jibber jabber in which they are trying to scare the potential reader and then at the end they conveniently place a link to their preferred method of treatment. How incredibly nice of them. A treatment, that is their basis of their method for treating sports injuries and which they offer for a small fee.

To all of you out there. When you search the web for medical advice, find out who is giving it, what are their qualifications and most importantly, do they have anything to gain, ie do they have a link at the bottom of the page that says, "To find out more about becoming one of our patients click here".
