    If I suck at surfing...

Should I even try to do it for a day in Costa Rica? Will be near Tamarindo. I do love trying, but I seriously lack any skill what so ever and I don't want to get washed out to sea.

That's the spot to learn! Inside/outside breaks. Stay more than a day. Work on the pop from prone to standing on dry land, till its fluid.

Take a private lesson or get hooked up with a surf camp. You'll get the basics down faster and you won't paddle out somewhere you probably should'nt. Good luck!

Check out Playa Avellanes. It is about 30 minutes south of Tamarindo. More breaks, less people, and more consistent than Tamarindo. There is also a nice little beach restaurant at the south end where you can park and get some grub at. All sand bottom too. Big tide swings there. It is best before, during, and after high tide. I spent over a week there at "The Wave House" in Playa Negra two years ago. Great times were had.

Is it possible to visit Tamarindo and not surf?
