    Shop mistake

So I had my Gotama's mounted tonight and when i got home i noticed that the brake on one seemed to hang up on one side and not the other. I had hoped that the brake was a little bent. No dice, the binding is approx. 5mm further from one side than the other on that ski. I'm guessing that the Jig was not large enough and he had to freehand them. On a 105 waisted ski am I being to picky? Should I make the shop replace the ski? WWMD?

A very reputable large ski shop. I don't want to dog on them since they take really good care of me. That is unless this is somthing that effects how the skis handle and they decide not to do anything about it. My biggest concern is that they wont be able to find another pair.

No, make them replace both skis. 5mm is a lot to be off center.

I don't get it, why do so many people get f'd up mounts? It's not like it's that difficult, esp. when they have tools designed for the job. Hell, I just mounted a pair in my garage the other day, no jig, just made a template.

I'm sure you paid major coin for those, make them do it right on a new pair.

    Just to plug them....

ProSki in Seattle freehanded my Gotama's no problem. They even told me when I brought them in..."uh, we don't have a big enough jig for this, but we can freehand it. Is that gonna be a problem?"

I too cannot understand how so many people seem to get f'd up mounts.

So, who was it? Sturtevant's? Bongwater skis in Greenwater?

EDIT - don't worry about replying, I know you wanted it to remain anonymous since they take care of you. I just wanted to share my nickname for Greenwater (Bongwater).

I say definitely take it to 'em, 5mm is a lot to be off of, and if it's a larger shop they make more than enough proceeds off of entry- and mid-level skiers to take care of their core crowd. Especially patrollers.

This exact thing has happened to me before. I went back to the shop and told them exactly what was wrong and that they could not have used a jig . I had paid alot of $$$ for the skis and I would not accept having the holes plugged because it should have been done properly in the first place.
So they ordered a new pair and then mounted them properly the first time.
    Don't settle for anything less.

I think a shop that doesn't have any big jigs says something about the shop... but that's just me...

Look/Rossi does not make a Jig large enough that they send to shops. Unless you know somthing I don't. Word has it they will soon though.

The shop is question is Stuartavents in Bellevue, they took care of the problem no questions asked by replaceing the skis outright, luckily they actually had another pair of goats. The guy at the shop decided not to mount the second pair though, I guess he mounted his own using the same jig combo (solly demo jig with Look jig piggybacked to it) today and they are a little off too ,though not nearly as much. So I'm going to take them to Louie in Greenwater, I know he's gonna be all over it. It's kinda dissapointing that I didnt leave with them all mounted up, but I thought it was good on them to admit they may not be able to do it right. Besides, not like there is any snow around here to ski them on right now anyway .

Ummm.... The brakes are not an issue, the binding was mounted off center. Also the jigs fit pistols.

Love them or hate them, pre-drilled factory plates take the bozo factor out of the mounting equation. I'm glad that you were able to get satifaction w/o any hassles, that says a lot about the shop too.

    Bing, bing, bing. Exactly.
If I can find shops in NH (read: NH=diarrhea[sp?] of precipitation) with wide jigs, a reputable shop there should definitely have them (jigs) or be able to template and measure, not some piggyback.

Well, I'll stick up for the shop too, their staff has been quite competent with me in the past, and they're a pretty honest shop. And he's right, Look/Rossi jigs are maxed out mounting to even Pistols, let alone anything wider than 95mm. When I bought my Kahunas, I decided I wanted a precision mount, from a jig....Solomon was the only brand that had a jig that could fit, and it barely fit. If I recall correctly, we had to remove the rubber stopper grips from the sides of the jig to get it to fit.

I'd done hand-drilled before several times, my Iggies are just a bit off so I don't want to do it anymore if I don't have to.

So, k-man....are you saying there's a cheap pair of blem goats for sale at the Bellevue store? I may have to swing by...

They mentioned using them for Demo stock this year. But who knows maybe they will turn up at the Ski-Mart down the street. They where drilled for looks and a sole length of 277, so anyone with normal sized boots shouldn't have any problem with a remount.

Well, I understand the Rossi/Look problem, because that entire family of binding companies doesn't do shit to support their own product/athletes -- Look doesn't even have a website... They make a race binding that all their pro riders use, yet can't accept wide brakes, nevermind the fact that they don't bother making them...

I freehanded my BigStix 10.6's with the 8.6 jig, and didn't have any problems whatsoever. Measure twice, drill once -- I guess it takes at least a high school education.

I can understand how people get bad mounts. It's not the easiest thing, and you def. need a feel for it. Things get f'ed when someone thinks they know what they're doing and just goes for it. At least, this is what I've seen.

Oh, and the Look website is under Dynastar, www.my-dynastar.com, BB.
