All I've got is a plane ticket and some skis....

Moving to France for the season...

Anyone got any suggestions on getting an apartment in Chamonix or Argentiere? Extra beds?...

    Much appreciated!

Do you realize that you've just posted an admission of ignorance so breathtaking that it disqualifies you from commenting on any political or economic threads from here on out?

Is it time for a fee-based information forum here for JONGS that come out of nowhere wanting the keys to the information treasure chest?

No contributions, just requests for tips from the people who earned that info the hard way. It just doesn't seem like those keys should be handed over without an offering of equal value.

Can't they see we're busy talking shit here?

    LOL.

I've just noticed an upswing in random first-post requests for a lot of info, as if there's a sign somewhere saying " Ask the geeks at TGR." You'd think people would at least cozy up a bit before asking to download the Encyclopedia Maggotannia.

You make some good points, splat. But, I guess anyone can ask... but, we (who have been around and developed relationships) do not have to answer or "give away keys". Silence is a good response to those we know little about. They come in expecting to burst upon the scene and score the "keys".

    My suggestion:
    - Use the search features and review past TGR forum discussions about Cham-town.
    - Use the internet to do some research about Cham area, businesses, hotels and hostels, employment.
    - Come back and ask questions that demonstrate the knowledge that you have earned / acquired.
when not on the snow what else do i do...

Yeah, or maybe the free advice impresses the noob JONGs so much that they keep coming back, post great stoke, and share their little slice of heaven.

Shit, man. A plane ticket and some skis. Some of us have started with a lot more. Sounds like maia is just trying to live the dream. Who knows. I'm willing to find out.

Wow thanks for the warm welcome guys!

I posted because I am at a complete loss... I can't find any info online about

    1) which is better to live in- Argentiere or Chamonix? I know Argentiere is closer to les Grands Montets, but Chamonix is better for Vallee Blanche- but would I ski there everyday? I need a beacon on all the time there right? I've heard the bus system can get a little packed so I'm trying to avoid it....

    2) I thought I'd stay in a hostel for a little while until I found an apmt, but the hostel that was recommended by friends and let's go, the red mountain lodge... doesn't have a functioning website... www.redmountainlodge.co.uk and they don't respond to redmountainlodge@yahoo.com which was listed... does anyone know if they're still in existence? Is there a better one w a website for online booking? hostels.com and hostelworld.com have nothing for Chamonix except Hotel du Savoie in Argentiere... but it's more expensive than a hostel... is it ok?

    3) the offer I got for an apmt in Chamonix central was for 4 months 5,500 euros for a 2 person studio... is that way too expensive or is it a good offer?

If anyone knows anything about it, I'd really appreciate it!!!

And yes, once I set up shop there from scratch... I'd be more than happy to help anyone out, since it's clearly a pain to do on your own!

I'd say the welcome was pretty warm considering your JONG status.

Unfortunately, I have no helpful information except the bus system is not to be avoided unless you have a car, or friends that have a car. The other option is walking, or holing up in one spot. It's free with your pass...might as well use it!

Oh, and I can't imagine skiing the Aguille every day... it might cause a blown mind.

As for how much $$$ you'll need, I had two friends that spent a season there comfortably (own place, passes, not super dirtbag) for $5000 USD housing included. That was in 2002....
