    Lets Talk Pitbooks

I've been searching for my ideal book. Right now I'm using the Backcountry Acess one
    http://www.backcountry.com/backcount...ess-field-book

My complaint is that I fill out all the snow profile pages way before the other sections and I rarely ever use the Tour Plan or any of the observation sections.
I use the profiles and do everything else on the lined blank pages.

Does anybody know of a book that is only profiles and blank pages?

    What is everybody else using?

I've been using Ian McCammon's book through his company Snowpit technologies. The first 2/3 of the book is daily observation pages with the stability rose diagram, with room for weather obs and other obs. Lots of crucial info like the lemons, ECT scoring, and so on. If you like the rose, this is your book.

If you'd prefer to go free-form, then the rite in the rain books are for you.

Some days, like teaching classes, I use the McCammon blue book. For guiding and going really light, I have a teeny little rite in the rain book that goes in a jacket breast pocket, much easier to actually use on the go.

Ian was out of books for my January avalanche forecasting course so we ordered class books from the CAC. Yuk. Useless for our purposes.

I used Ian McCammon's book for several years but recently had to switch to the AIARE book. I really like the stability rose though. I think it's all personal preference. Hacksaw's book looks pretty good as well.

I have Hacksaw's which is nice. I have used Ian's book. It is nice too.

The AIARE book is massively overpriced and I don't like it as much as the others.

Honestly, a lot of days I just use a simple little flip notepad.

    Camlax,

I think you'd really like my field book/pit book. It has the right balance of daily field/tour log pages and pit pages. Plus all the necessary SWAG codes for pits and field ops.

Thanks for all the info guys. I ended up with the "Level" because if its simplicity and versatility. I did really like the look of Hacksaws book too if you like to draw your pit profile while in the field.

What? I have never had any customers say that one. For me after couple of hundred snowpits later, I don't find it very hard to draw my snowpit in the book while in the field.

    Well, to each their own...

OOPS! Your right, I read Camlax's response a little too fast. My book was designed for use in the field (i.e., drawing your snow profiles in the field).

Hacksaw - your book looks pretty cool (as does the Ian one).

I have always used the AAIRE ones, but I agree with Summit - they are way overpriced. Although I like the addition of the Rose in the obvs/trip planning pages. There is just something about short-handing the forecast, with notes and filling in the Rose, that I like on the morning of a trip. But you can always do that same thing on any graphed-page book.

May have to check out Hacksaw's when my current book runs out of pages.

Well, the system I have (fax me credit card order OR mail check/money order with printed order form) has been working just fine. And you are actually the first and only person that has made a request for paypal.
