I do not. But last year at Tremblant, in freaking freezing conditions there was a guy extolling the virtues of the Marmot Ultimate glove. He said the glove was warm in spite of the deep freeze.
I ski because it releases my mind from the tyranny of petty things.
"This deep snow makes my skis stupid!"
I used a pair of the Randonee glove last year. I don't know if it was just these or all my gloves but after about 15-20 days the seams starting coming undone. This was about twice as long as it took my last pair of TNF gloves to fall apart though. Generally I have been really happy with marmot gear, however not these.Originally Posted by Benny Profane
I have the rando glove and love the comfort and warmth they provide. Have yet to find their cold temperature limit. Good breathability on warm/wet days. The XCR provides extra range of motion in the fingers and grip. I usually go through a pair of gloves a season, and these have shown no wear or tear as of yet (used for 6 months). I ended up scoring a good deal at REI with a 20% off coupon and my dividend, so the hefty price tag didn't bother me all that much.
The Ultimate looks like a ripoff. I wouldn't be able to justify spending $150 on a glove.
I just bought the rando glove this season; it's nice, and comfortable, but it's not quite as warm as I was hoping it would be.
After getting mild frostbite on my left hand several years ago at work, my thumb gets frosty pretty quick; I thought a $100 glove would be warm enough, but the first day out, it didn't work as well as I'd hoped. I'm going to keep them, and ski in them some more, but may buy a Black Diamond Guide glove, which I hear will keep even the most sensitive digits nice and toasty...
If you have cold hands RB, your best bet is mittens, not gloves. No matter how well insulated a glove is, a mitten will be warmer. I ski in gloves until the temp drops below about 18 or 20 degrees, then I switch over to big mittens that will keep me warm even in the midst of a nuclear winter. I've never tried Marmot gloves, but PM gear KevGloves seem bomber and warm, as well as cheap, so they may be worth a look.
I have a pair of Swany SX-13 gloves that I love most days. They have about 100-110 days on them including riding ropetows, bushwacking and general abuse and are just showing signs of wear and tear on the thumbs and palms. A little duct tape and I should easily get another 100 days out of them. They run about $70 retail and are nice all around. Give them a look as well. Marmot to me seems flashy and expensive, but not all that bomber. If you want expensive stuff that will last forever, my money is on Patagonia stuff, but thats just me.
I've just retired a pair of Rando gloves after 3 seasons. The ruberised palm finally wore out from rope use. A pair of silk weight liners made them warm enough for anything in the PNW and they dealt with our damp conditions fine.
I just picked up a pair of OR Aretes with removeable liners. The shells work great over a windstopper glove for more layering options when touring.
One thing that has always kept me from buying marmot gloves is the lack of removable liner. That makes it a deal braker for me. For something similiar to the Ultimate glove (but still no removable liner) for a lot less $$$ check out Cabelas.
Mammut Zermatt glove. Best glove evar. Removable liner, waterproof, breathe well, gauntlett, wrist cords, and completely BOMBER palm and fingers. You will not cut these gloves.

I had a similar experience as CUBUCK w the randos, stitching came undone real fast. took them to the marmot store and they switched em out for me a for a pair of the ultimates, ive liked them a lot so far, construction seems better and they are softer. i agree that mittens are warmer but have never skied w them.
I'm with glademaster. Mittens WILL keep your hands warmer than gloves. After getting another new pair of gloves every year because they got cold fast, I decided to go with some mits. I got the Smartwool backcountry mit. They are REALLY comforatable, and REALLY warm. I dont think I ever used a liner in them at all last season (several days in the teens and single digits). The only problem is my hand has spontaniously grown and they dont fit as well anymore.

i have a pair of 5 yr old ultimate gloves that still work great. granted, after 5 yrs, they are rather beat, but still useable. the leather palm has held up amazingly well, a little duck tape here and there, but like i said, they are 5 yrs old. only bummer on these is no removeable liner (as someone stated)..when they get "wet" (as any glove will do after a full on day or 2 in the back country), they get a little heavy, etc...but never got cold wearing them even when "wet".
Freshie Glove Rating Scale (1-10) : a solid 8
compared with some DaKine Rangers (goretex, removeable liners, goggle wipe): 7.5
leather work gloves (for spring skiing) 6
I have the smartwool ultimate glove and have been happy (with the 2nd liner - comes with the gloves) in down to around -10 fahrenheit. They're bomber - had em for 3 seasons and just a bit of the fake texture on the palms is wearing off - and I'm usually pretty hard on gloves. I would highly recommend them - I don't know how much they are as I got them through a smartwool rep - wife of a friend.
Another thumbs down for Marmot stitching. My Marmot Spring Gloves detonated after 10 days of normal recreational use.
"These are crazy times Mr Hatter, crazy times. Crazy like Buddha! Muwahaha!"
I've had friends suffer with the quality of the marmots. Check cabellas. $40 and if you have any problems you'll get your money back. I have cold hands and these work well for me. Better than Burton, Patagucci, BD and whatever else I've had.
All I know is don't buy the Marmot work gloves, they are seriously the worst gloves I have ever owned, they trap moisture and freeze your hands after just a couple of hours. Cheap-ass Columbia or Gordidni gloves are ten times better.
I've had the rando glove for 6 years or so. I'm a pretty big fan of the gloves performance. By far my favorite thing has been the lifetime warranty (not too good if you tear the shit out of your gloves on your own though).
Mine started to leak about a year ago, and they sent me a brand new pair of the XCR rando gloves without too much hassle. Good times.
My feelings exactly. Those are seriously the worst gloves I have ever purchased.Originally Posted by iceman
I don't think that mittens would make a lot of difference for RB, considering that it's his thumb that's having frostbite apres-tingle.
I have both the Randonee and the Ultimate. The Rando is a much better glove-just as warm, if not warmer, and the palm wets out much less easily. There may well have been significant design changes in the last few years, but if I were buying again, based on my experience, I'd go Rando for sure.
The Ultimate is cool looking, though.
I'll offer you your money back if PM Gear's KevGlove ain't the most durable glove you ever owned. Maggot special: $40 shipping included.
Just do the Paypal thang with a 'maggot special' note attached.
Forgot to mention: PmGear gloves rool, other gloves drool.
Yeah, I can't wait to try my KevGloves out, especially since I got them for free.![]()
I think shoveling and snowblowing the driveway would be a good way to break them in, eh?
I've used the ultimate glove for going on a third season... I usually go through at least one or two pairs of gloves a season, but the ultimates are still in top-notch shape and are warmer than any other gloves I've ever tried.Originally Posted by Benny Profane
Ditto on the Marmot Work Glove. Most of their stuff works great, but this one's a real pooch. Hands freeze in anything approaching cold temps. I've relegated mine to warm days only. They need to redo the design on that one or dump it. My cheapo ($49.95) Kombi, Primaloft/ Goretex gloves are way warmer.
now you guys tell me. I just bought a pair of the work gloves yesterday (on sale at least). Well maybe I will have better luck.
Did you guys ever try coating them with water repellent silicone spray? And if so any effect?
