Chamonix.com is still claiming 30-40cm today and it's currently raining in town... Saturday could be a powder day...

A weather front has moved down across the French Alps today but it is still quite warm so only snowing above 2000m (3.5C at 1800m earlier today).

Touring last weekend was good on south-facing slopes. Spring snow in mid-winter but just look at the verglas covering e-n-w sector slopes yesterday. It was about 1-2cm thick and probably formed when we had rain to 2500-2700m last week which turned to ice when it hit the snow surface.

Under the layer of ice is old powder snow but there also seemed to be a layer of facetted snow just under the verglas. Watch out with the fresh snow today. There is also a layer of depth hoar on north facing slopes in the Vanoise.

damn it is supposed to get bitterly cold by next Thrusday. down to -14C here in Leysin. They are calling for somewhere around ~25cm tues/wed. Dont know how accurate that is but at least it means snow and not rain...

The natives are getting restless here, storm coming in, windy and wet. It is a bit funny to watch the growing unease. Wish the centre of this was hitting the alps.

and they have every right to be in northern germany. Hurricane force winds ain't no real fun

interestingly the cold front coming in tonight is now predicted to hit the eastern alps. (the models varied every run if it would or not)
AND they calculated more precip every model run. So right now there could be 80cm-1m of fresh in the east (above 1400-2000m depening how far east you are). The lowest freezing will be east of the kripp though

next week a low might form in the medteranean (fuck this word) and may bring snow to the south side. we'll see where and how much.....
It's a war of the mind and we're armed to the teeth.

I knocked back a trip there cause I thought it would rain and the snow was shit.

Oh, and I know that it is bad weather for here, I just like watching people panic.

I think I'm going to be in Zermatt for a few days, the forecasts I'm looking at are calling for 50-70cm next week. If anyone is going to be around let me know.

Hey Ripz, I've heard off-piste at Zermatt is particularly crevasse filled. Is that true? Know any guides or locals there?

Got a phone call this morning from my friend in St. Anton. Raining hard in the village but absolutely puking up high on Valluga. He says they are expecting a big storm now on Sunday into Monday also.

yup, the glaciers have taken a beating in recent years so tread lightly offpiste. i don't know any guides/locals tho. you might PM utly_guy, he seems to know quite a bit about Zermatt.

I was just speaking to a guy up there. The glacier links with les Deux Alpes are closed, which you may view as a good thing (less gapers). It rained to around 2700m last night but 20cm of snow above that level. There is a lot of crust and ice around on north-faces at the mo. I'm restricting all my skiing to east - south - south-west slopes at the moment off piste.

i'm meant to be in la grave for the season again, but i've torn a muscle so won't be out there for a while.

my friend was there for a while last week, and he said he had a couple of good days just after it snowed, and that conditions seemed alot better than further up north round portes du soleil. he said pretty much what you've said - good up top, getting crappy further down.

and in answer to roo, he said the entrance to trifide was a horrible mess!

Garten itself isn't on the Glacier and always fun (though looky out for avies ).
Stuff off of Hohtälli is glacier free also (also have your avies eyes on).
Good glacier free off piste around Gornergrat also.
Obvious lines off skiers right of the Furgsattel lift can be subject to crevasses but get so much trafiic that I wouldn't be too scared...
Some nice (obvious) stuff on the italian side without crevasses also.

Dunno how things are looking at the moment. Judging from the Roo report early this season, the crevasses high up on the glacier below Klein Matterhorn (above Spiegelwand face) looked pretty open.
