In response to GFT's question (and a personal thanks for the character vote, except for this "competent skier" bit ;-) ), where were we?
Briancon/Serre Chevalier might be a decent locale where a car would definAtely open up a lot more.
Bourg St. Maurice with short, easy public transpo to Les Arcs/La Plagne and some connections to La Rosiere/La Thuile, St. Foy and Vald'Isere/Tignes. Although the latter might impinge upon the non glitzy request where that annoying class of self unaware, social climbing seasonaires manifest.
Andermatt/Disentis SkiArena is a good choice with fairly easy train connections to a couple other places.
As mentioned, I've been impressed with Klosters/Davos for variety and the bon vivant abundance of our own wp_bw_hedonism. Touring there is amazing.
How about Gargellen/Silvretta/Montafon? It's a huDge area with lots of history and options. We have mags there too.
I'd skip St. Anton as overrun.
Innsbruck would be a good location with a shitload of easy access options like Schlick, Stubai, Nordkette as well as counsel by our buddy of that last name. It's a real city with all the social activities that would be cool.
Gasteinertal is cool, enormous and gets a lot of snow with train access to a bunch of other spots like Mallnitz.
Or Zell am See area with Kaprun, Kitzsteinhorn and Glossgrockener within an hour public transpo?
