just finished skiing in st anton. snowed about 20-30cm last night and the rain didn't reach the valley. currently sunny and warm. The snow is really wind hammered and shit is moving all over the place. After triggering 2 small avalanches in one run on mellow terrain we decided that we're better off to call it a day than to keep on skiing.

Knee deep for lots of runs in Verbier today. Guess about 25-30cm overnight last night. Warm in the village, not much down here. Warmed up and snow got a bit heavy but snowing again now. Only downside: it's gaper central here. I've never seen so many people...

But you can piss in the kettle in the meantime.

So, does this mean your place in Terrasses is empty? I could feel a deal coming on...

someone took a dump behind the main desk at the reception during our xmas party.... maybe something along those lines when i leave!

yep, it's empty at the moment. i might be going out for a week starting the 7th, but again it's down to my boss, as i'm basically his bitch at the moment....

you'd be welcome to go out and use it. there's no point having it go to waste.

    Where to go in France/Italy

I've got plane tix into Nice on 1/13 and looking for recommendations on where to ski somewhere reasonably close. I'll have a car.
Originally planned on Alanga, Italy, but not enough snow yet. Now we're thinking Chamonix.
I've never skied in Europe, so does anyone have recommendations on where to go? Any advice once you're there as well. thx.

Morning I left Les Arcs there was an easy foot on the ground, with plenty of wind movement, so probably areas even deeper. Shit.

from nice you probly want to head up to brancon and check serre chevalier or a tad further to la grave/les deux alpes/alp d'huez. cham is doing quite well for snow but is considerably further away. watch the snow, italy could easily get dumped by then.

^^ Those places aren't that close to Nice - 4-5 hours min for SC, 6-7 for Cham. Some of the Alpes Maritimes have had good early season snow (eg Isola 2000 - 1.5 hours from Nice) and some of the Southern Alpes stuff around Gap (eg Orcieres Merlette, 3.5 hours) can be fun although I don't know the conditions now.

Just came off the mountain. Another 10-20cm higher above Verbier, got first tracks down Tortin. 10 turns. Then found some waist deep shots. Unfortunately I need to sleep now...

yeah, i figgered if he was thinking cham, then he was thinking the bigger ski areas. there are closer options.

hey al, are you still in verb? i just got back from super st bernard - looking really nice there with very few people. i didnt even see any tracks offpiste. it wasnt completely wind-ripped as usual.

Quick update for you guys. After spending 4 days in the park (can now slide rails - strange!), Les Deux Alpes got nuked on the 30th and 31st. Today (1st) was an excellent day: face shots on Super Diable, big "Ingrid Backstrom"-style lines on the freshies on the glacier.

    Photos and videos to follow.

La Grave was closed the last two days. I am crossing my fingers for tomorrow. I'll be with a friend in Chamonix from tomorrow onwards. E-mail might be tricky so send me a text on +43 664 4730437 if you want to hook up for some turns.

TeleAl, Verb61 - thanks for the update, I'll keep you posted.

    areas close to Nice

Thanks for the info so far. You guys mentioned some smaller areas closer to Nice. Doesn't need to be a big resort, we like the smaller areas. Anyone have additional recommendations or know the conditions of these places?
    thx.

    2 Reports:

    Yesterday
    Fresh snow on hill.

    Today
    Fresh snow on hill.

Both days are looking at some 30-40 cm outside my door.
Today was a complete surprise. I just heard the snowplow arrive.
Now I rush to go skiing.

    Happy New Year!

    But, declined. Exhausted from yesterday.

What do you think the chances of G3 opening Tuesday?
Closed the last 3 days...tooo much blower?!?
when not on the snow what else do i do...

    G3.

G3 won't open the day after snow, unless it has been open already.
I have no idea when it will open, but this last storm(s) came from the West,
thus it should have piled up in there. Snowline remained below La Combe too.
The storm before came from the North, and that ruined it (my guess).

I've no data on the place and the plans.
Relying on internet like the rest of us for its opening.
Would be happy to learn that Cabane to Reusch is open.
And of course, Scex Rouge to Col du Pillon is always staring at me.

You bring a rope, I'll bring a tree to tie it to.
Ripz can bring a roll of toilet paper.

Otherwise, I am going up there in the Summer with a pick-axe, some dynamite,
and a drill to widen that narrow (icy) footpath of a traverse over the cliffs.
No joke, I might just propose it to the new owners.

    Fire in the hole!

I am with ya on creating a few traverses...and safer traverses.
I will be wearing Attends (adult pull-up diapers) if I am called up for duty.

Tuesday AM: Woke up at 6:30AM and saw the Bise whipping up the surf on Leman. No go 4 me.

Only the teleskis on G3 glacier are open; Sunshine...but -13c and winds 40 to 60km/h.

G3 closed early on Monday afternoon due to cold and winds.

After 24 hours of high winds, I imagine all the blower is wind-affected/crusted...
or else, blew off the glacier and fell on Les Diablerets and Villars.

According to my boss (a local guide)
seven people died in avalanches in the Mt Blanc area this weekend.

(This is only second hand info but it might pay to be careful out there.)
