Question North Face Ama Dablam jacket?

Since I've left the harsh climes of New England and don't have to ride the Green Mtn Freezer anymore, I don't need my bulky mtn hardwear coat. I'm in the market for a light, waterproof shell. Softshells aren't really in the mix cause i'm big boned and they all are cut a little slim for me.

This jacket looks like it would fit the bill, and after trying it on over the weekend I'm kind of smitten with it. Anyone have it? Likey? No likey?

Anybody know where I could find it below the MSRP which is ~ 380? Gracias.

    see here for details.

ive never used the north face jacket but if all you want is a waterproof shell go for the marmot precip. i have one of these and they are sick! it looks a lot like the north face jacket and this jacket is really durable and very functional and is EXTREMELY waterproof yet still VERY breathable. (the jacket is so waterproof that at the marmot store where i bought it they had a plexiglass cylinder with the precip material closing off either end. the cylinder was filled with water and i was moving it around and poking at it and there was no way the water was coming out). i use it for climbing and skiing and have never gotten wet through it.

take a look at it - its not nearly as expensive as the north face jacket (notice $99.99)...

I on the other hand have had horrible luck with the pre-cip. Doesnt breath worth a damn, sure its waterproof--its a plastic bag. Wasnt impressed with the quality either, the interior DWR coating came off on the inside of the jacket in high stress areas, waterproof no more.

stump, if ya want a softshell www.beyondfleece.com . They'll custom build em for ya, so fitting is not a problem. I got one and swear by it, best single piece of clothing I own.

If you are going to be doing anything strenuous, get a gore tex shell. The difference between my old precip and my new gore xcr shell is frigging amazing. I'm no longer wet under my shell, and in turn, no longer cold.

I think there is an IME in slc stump, might be worth checking out their consignment stuff.

Oh yeah, less than three weeks, woot woot.

You still have those freerides you were going to sell? my roommate is looking for a pair.

Love my arc'teryx Beta AR. It's bomber as hell, breathes like nothing else, and is completely and utterly waterproof. Look around for sales - I got mine for 250. Paying retail (4-something) is ridiculous... though the quality can't be beat.

    Thanks for the replies d00ds.

I actually looked at the Precip, but it didn't seem that bomber - ie, seemed like it might not hold up under alot stress. I'm not really that core, but in addition to general resort use, I'd probably end up doing a bunch of hiking/climbing/BC stuff in this jacket, and I wasn't that confident the precip would cut the mustard. It does seem like it'd be solid for general inbounds usage though.

I'll have to run the beyondfleece stuff by my fashion consultant to see if she approves , and then head out and try on the Beta AR. Those things generally fit a bit too slim for my cartman dimensions, but worth a shot I suppose.

CD - 3 weeks?? thats it? crazy. Hopefully by the time you show up the high pressure will have peaced the F out. I've still got the freerides, but Lumpy has spoken for em. Sorry dude.

Used to work for TNF, and the Ama Dab is a good jacket.

GTX XCR yadda yadda, only thing to really remember is no snow skirt. My girlfriend loves her one and just rocks a higher waisted pant to cut down on the "snow in pants" syndrome.

Plus they do also have the limited lifetime warranty, so it should keep it going for plenty long.

However, just stepped up to the Arc'Teryx Sidewinder SV. That is a badass jacket for sure, I'm lovin it like nobody's business

Yeah, gonna be good. Just in case, I'm bringing a full ice rack and some rock gear, so whatever the weather I can find something to do. Three weeks is a lot of time, that HP will be replaced with maximum dumpage, I know it.

And the beyond fleece stuff is HOT. When your fashion consultant sees me in it, she wont be able to keep her hands off.

Yeah, thankfully for me shes not into the beyondfleece-wearing, oliveoyl cross-dressing steeze. Elsewise I'd obviously have no shot. But shes peacing out on Monday anyways.

Is it wrong of me to state that I'm jealous of you guys and your snow right now?

the beta is kinda short so unless youre rockin bibs snow could find a way in pretty easily. unless you need a harness friendly shell, look at somethin a lil longer (like the ama dablam or equivalent.. theta ar is nice).
Dude chill its the padded room. -AKPM
