    New prototypes Odyssey Powder skis

I was at Baker today skiing the hard pack after days of rain then clearing and cold temps. I ran into Paul Nelson who makes Odyssey skis and Howard, his bro-in-law and main ski tester. They were on two super fat pow ski prototypes. One was 181 and the other 184. One wider than the other. It wasn't a good day for powder skis except to see how versatile they might be. Howard, who is a strong skier said he was surprised at how well these skis did on the hardpack. He also said he might want a slightly softer flex for the cat skiing he does but for Baker's heavier pow they would be good in the stiffer flex. These are definately wider than the BroModels, are more specialized for powder. Like their other skis I imagine they will be made to order as far as flex goes. Their website is updated but no mention of these skis yet.

Bump because these skis looked pretty radicool. Think Tabla/Prophet/huge girthyness.

Anything interesting about the tip/tail/camber/other parts of the design? Or are they just large?

Fiddler was trying to explain how/why the skis looked the way they did but I didn't really get it, but they look like they have an extra core on top of the normal thickness ski, all wrapped up in a cap of some sort. Of course what I just said is super vague and doesn't actually help, but I didn't actually fondle them, just saw them on the dude's feet.

This was the first pair of skis that I have actually seen that made me think "looks like two snowboards!"

Maybe they have their regular 177 mid-fat core on top of the wider core? Did it look like that?

Bingo! The base extended in all directions from the 177 core. Bindings mounted on that. One pair had the 177 core and binding offset towards the inside edge. The other had the core in the middle but I think the bindings were still offset a little. If I recall, I thought I heard him say one of them had a 139 tip. They also had the edge of the inside ski under the boot serrated or something to help edge on hard or icy snow. It looked like a groove in the bottom of the edge. Not a twin tip but a rounded raised rear end. (hmmm, that reminds me of something...) I'd love to try these out, when we get a big dump of snow sometime hopefully sooner than later. Since they were prototypes I don't know what the final construction will look like but I suspect it will be pretty much the same. Given the great price on their eMax, I'd hope for an equally good price for these new boards. They still have a few pairs of the original fat skis they made, 99 wide but in short lengths, 163, for something like $150.

    165 tip? Holy surfboards, Batman!

They look nice, though. I like the name, the color, and the lack of graphics. Someone here *has* to get a pair of these.

Look at the mounting holes in the pic... Those bindings were offset HUGE. I would like to take these for a spin with no binding offset.

hell yeah they're wayyyyy off center. that can't be a result of camera angle, can it?

Sounds similar to what Mervin Manufacturing (GNU) is doing on some of their snowboards this year, and supposedly spreading it through their line next year. From what I've heard the serrated edge is pretty sweet, but from a tech standpoint wouldn't stand up to tuning very well in the long-run.

The Ogre looks nice, don't get that much of an off-set though.

Splat is funny. Case you didn't know.
