The New Force in Tahoe Skiing...

opened on Thursday. The Chutes at Mt Rose are now officially open and oh my, holy chit, whatever, there is some serious terrain to be had. The Chutes run a consistent 40 degrees with 1400 verticat feet plus of N to NE facing fall line skiing and 200 acres.

You like West Face at Squaw the Chutes compare, East Face, Bacon's Gully, Silver Belt at Sugar Bowl, The Chutes are better, Estellle , Beaver, Palisades, Keyhole at Alpine, The Chutes are comparable. You name the resort our little rinky dink resort has joined the elite.Don't believe me, check them out yourselves. If you like steeps, trees, light snow (7900 foot base), if you come to Tahoe and only ski the name resorts, you're missing out. Mark my words when the word gets out this will be a must ski resort. 20 minutes from my front door a visible from just about anywhere in this desert hellhole.

If I sound jazzed I am. I've skied Mt Rose since 1982. I've poached The Chutes many times but I never expected so much steep fall line skiing as I had today, and we could on ski 1/3 of the area because the tops of the real steep chit slid. The Chutes will not see sun until March so snow quality is excellent although you could tell the moisture content was higher than normal.

Here's an articlle from the local rag

Some photos and video as well

Did I mention that there's a new kid on the block

Both times I skied Mt. Rose I skied the Chutes, and thanks to chuteme (hasn't been seen here in forever), got one top to bottom run both times (he picked me up at the bottom).
You're right about how great they are. It sort of sucks, I guess, that they'll be all tracked up and even moguled now, but you guys get enough snow to remedy that regularly.
    Good news.
Are they running a shuttle from the road?

I'd like to second this. I've always drooled at them when I drove by on 431.

Dude........STFU! Please? The word will get out soon enough without you shoutin' from the treetops. Mums the word.

Move along people, nothing to see here.

You'd better stay in Utah. Otherwise, I hope you leave room for my fist...

The steepness definitley rivals almost anything off of KT-22. As a whole you are correct Squaw is Squaw. One thing Rose has is elevation, IE when ithe snow level is 8000 feet Rose is getting snow. BTW I know of at least 6 Squaw Valley pass holders who also have Mt Rose passes. Just out of curiosity, I wonder how good KT was this weekend, that mid-winter snow in The Chutes sure is fun The tree skiing on the Slide side is pretty kick-ass right now as well.

    Dexter,

There are 2 chairlifts you need to ride, a fixed grip quad to get out of The Chutes and a high speed six pack to get back to the top. We were running 17 to 20 minute round trips this weekend.

    Sick is the word!!

Hit 2 more chutes that I didn't hit yesterday, friggin' killer, one was the steepest I've git yet, both had mid winter snow. 2/3 of The Chutes still closed, remember Rose is reporting a max base of 52".
