opened on Thursday. The Chutes at Mt Rose are now officially open and oh my, holy chit, whatever, there is some serious terrain to be had. The Chutes run a consistent 40 degrees with 1400 verticat feet plus of N to NE facing fall line skiing and 200 acres.
You like West Face at Squaw the Chutes compare, East Face, Bacon's Gully, Silver Belt at Sugar Bowl, The Chutes are better, Estellle , Beaver, Palisades, Keyhole at Alpine, The Chutes are comparable. You name the resort our little rinky dink resort has joined the elite.Don't believe me, check them out yourselves. If you like steeps, trees, light snow (7900 foot base), if you come to Tahoe and only ski the name resorts, you're missing out. Mark my words when the word gets out this will be a must ski resort. 20 minutes from my front door a visible from just about anywhere in this desert hellhole.
If I sound jazzed I am. I've skied Mt Rose since 1982. I've poached The Chutes many times but I never expected so much steep fall line skiing as I had today, and we could on ski 1/3 of the area because the tops of the real steep chit slid. The Chutes will not see sun until March so snow quality is excellent although you could tell the moisture content was higher than normal.
Here's an articlle from the local rag
