Kirkwood 10/10 TR - "knee wrenching conditions"

Kirkwood yesterday was fun if you stayed where others had already skied - venturing into "untracked" was TERRIBLE - it had rained and left a nice rain crust on top of mush. In some places, you could almost see your reflection in it! Oops was good, as were the main lines in wagon wheel and the gullies off of 10 - eagle bowl was fun when it had sun on it, and Norms was actually skiable!!!!!

We decided that it was officially a bad idea to leave the runs . . . So, I decided to head to the car and get tele skis (cuz if you're stuck on groomers, why not?!?) . . . . took the shortcut through the trees (despite earlier realizations), and it was manky breakable. I got going too fast, and saw the fall develop, tried to scrub speed with a turn, went down, but my left ski stayed put in a position that nobody would describe as natural . . . I felt a twist, screamed (so I didn't hear anything else), and was sure I had really done it.

Of course, given all the knee issues this board has seen recently, especially in the Tahoe region, I was freaking out. I had never really accepted the reality of a knee injury until recently and was pretty sure this was my day.

Fast forward to lph saving the day - not knowing what to think, and being sure I had done something, I called the guy I knew would know best. He was working, so I went to his office, did x-rays and an MRI to find out I haven't torn anything (thank God!). Honestly, I can't thank you enough!!! Yet another example of the overhwelming good spirit and generosity on this board!

So, now I get to jump through the Kaiser hoops and see where I stand . . . might have to take some time off, but at least surgery, etc. is unlikely

And that's my story - KW might be good by tomorrow if things have corned up and consolidated . . . gimpy and co. were gonna explore some S facing happiness today, so they may have some conditions update

    Thanks again lph!!!!

like I told ya earlier...I'm soooooo glad that your knee turned out ok. Hopefully with this sprain you'll just have a little down time and then you'll be back chargin again. And this is also another shining example of why lph rules.

And what's with these tele skis? Those new?

    sweet.

Greydon has been hounding me to pick up some tele gear...but then I figured, why buy more skis & bindings when I can just ski around on my Freeride setup in walk mode?

Holy shit! Thank god the prognosis is good. Heal up quick Kell. We don't want to lose another part of the crew, especially the one with that great big smile.

Oh, I heard a great joke today. Perhaps you know it...

What did the mama buffalo say to her child when he left for school?

I was glad I was able to tell Kellie the damage wasn't too severe. Last thing i wanted to do was have to tell her her ACL was toast. just a relatively mild injury which hopefully will heal up in a matter of weeks.

i could hear the fear in her voice when she called me and glad i was around and able to get some xrays and an mri done quickly. tough part was finding an orthopod to talk to at almost 5pm on a friday afternoon.

kellie, let me know what your local doctor says.

lph is the mang for sure. damn kellie that blows but it sure could be worse. we missed ya up tallac today where we skied the big south facing chute off the summit ridge. after variable skinning conditions up the summer trail, we were rewarded w/ sweetass ego corn on the descent. a little bit of everything up there w/ south facing being the most reliable. went up to the summit to peak at some lines and the main elevator shaft cross entrance has a while to go. couldn't tell if north bowl was smooth windbuff or boilerplate. and there was actually some ok windbuff off the summit. heal up sister!!!!

Glad to hear it's nothing serious Kellie. I had a similar fall last year in some mank and thought I had blown it right out. Lots of swelling and pain. Dr. Orr put me on Bextra ( ) for a week and it solved my problems.....and no heart attack yet. lph has got some serious + karma backlogged. He is a very cool guy when it comes to giving you first hand, accurate info on what's happening inside.

Oh yea, gimpy and co. found just about every type of Spring condition imaginable in Cathedral Bowl today - including $$$$ corn on south facing slopes. Amazing how Tuesday's powder is already Saturday's corn.
I couldn't stick around as long as those guys, so I'm not sure what they ended up skiing and riding, although I'm sure they will report in with some sweet descents.
I headed down this line to make sure I could pick up the kids on time w/o pissing off the boss:

And Tyrone, that tele thing on AT gear ain't easy, at least not for me. I think it's the whole toe flex thing that makes it like riding a bike on ice.

let's hope my accuracy stays high, i definitely feel alot more 'pressure' to be right when it comes to my friends and family. but part of practicing in a small town is realizing that you are going to take care of your neighbor, the waitress at your favorite restaraunt, the owner of a major casino, etc....

i am always glad to help and glad i was able to give kellie good news.
