    I'd be in, but....

The babysitter who was scheduled to watch the kids Firday so I can ski had a family emergency in CO, so she is gone. If one of you doesn't mind lugging a 28 lb 15 month old up in your pack ( I get the lighter one, only 25 lbs) and my smarter half approves of me skiing in terrain that I am completely unfammiliar with (at least in the winter) and taking the kids along, then I am in!

From Gordon's forecast for the Uintas today.

The avalanche danger is “SCARY” MODERATE today on slopes steeper than about 35 degrees, particularly those that haven’t avalanched yet, which face northwest through east. “Scary” moderate means that human triggered avalanches are possible and if you trigger an avalanche today it will be deep, dangerous, and quite possibly deadly.

For now the avalanche activity seems to be quieting down and yesterday was the first day since the beginning of the storm that I didn’t see or hear of any new avalanches. That’s usually a good sign and I think today’s colder temperatures will help to lock the snowpack in place. However, there are still places where you could trigger an avalanche today, particularly on slopes that haven’t avalanched yet.

Up here in Logan the best skiing is on true south faces. Mostly supportable, fun skiing on crust that softens up in the sun. I was thinking the same for the Uintas.

I think the storm blew in from the southwest with the heinous SW winds. Hence the northwest through east danger listed above.

    Still interested?

Experienced the same conditions during my weekly Sunday Service this past weekend. December corn on the S aspects, settled pow on the N, crusts everywhere in-between. Time it right and conditions are great.

The winds stayed strong as they swung to the NW, hence all E and N aspects have been more sensitive (also where most of the larger slides have happened).

Hope you have a good time on Friday, can't make it 'till the weekend.

    tele Mark,

Thanks for the beta. I was kind of looking for some info to confirm my south face theory.

If nothing else, a long, mellow tour will be fun. Any time your experiencing solitude in the Uintas is a good time.

Sorry TH, my PM is limited as my better half and I are spending the weekend at the Inn at Solitude.

I hear rumours of the local innkeeper there to be a ripping skier once or twice a year. Though I'm yet to witness it in '04.

Gramps and I are meeting at the first Evanston exit coming from SLC at 8:00 AM tomorrow. I have a big old white GMC 1/2 ton with a white shell, snowmobile trailer.

Have room for two more. I'm sure it will be just Gramps and I, but if you're inspired, show up there. Have room for two more.

Thinking supportable surface on south facing slopes.
