    POP in my back.

Weird question. I do bicycle crunches everyday on my new diet/workout routine.

On almost every (not all) leg extension I get a loud pop in my lower back. Loud enough that others can hear it in the other room (maybe it's the resonance off the floor?). No pain accompanies this. I'm kind of worried as your back isn't supposed to 'pop' but with no pain I'm kind of torn.

I was told when I went in for my appendectomy I do have 2 minor hernia's and I know jack shit about those so I thought maybe I should mention them even though I assume that has nothing to do with anything.

I'm in pretty good shape, have always been very active and am very flexible. ideas?

Sounds to me like your SI joint may be hypermobile and occasionally slips, causing the pop?
    Are you 'double jointed'?

    Dunno, that's my guess.

Hmmm. Still sounds SI related to me because mine pops doing the same motion (I just tried it), but I am hypermobile.

If it's your SI, you should be able to feel the pop on one side or the other while doing the motion, just above your butt where the hip meets the lower back.

Well lets just say I'm unsure if I am double jointed. My brother is and he can pop his thumbs up. I can "sort of" do it and feel a pop but only in my right hand. Would that mean I am partially double jointed? hmm :/

Onto my back. Yes, what you described is where I feel it. Do you think it is something I should worry about? I do 60 in the morning and 60 at night so if I am hurting myself without knowing it maybe I should figure out a new ab workout.

When I was diagnosed as being hypermobile, here's what they tested:

    - you can hyperextend your elbows when you extend your arms in a "T" shape at your sides with palms in air;
    - you can pull your thumb all the way down to the side of your wrist
    - you can pull fingers backwards to your wrist
    - you can easily lock hands behind your back (one over your shoulder, one around the side of the back) in both directions
    - when you lock your knees, they mildly hyperextend
and some others I don't remember. You had to score a certain # of points if i recall.

The thing with hypermobility is it can manifest in other joints, like the SI or back joints, as well. My SI is hypermobile which causes issues in my lumbar spine, which is not.

If there's no pain, probably not an issue (though I don't know for sure).

After several hard crashes my back started doing exactly the same thing on leg extensions. For what it's worth, I've been experiencing that for 15 years and my back is healthier now than ever. I talked to my chiropractor about it and he just shrugged and said, "some guys are built that way." This was 10 years ago, about 5 yrs ago I got my back strong enough to stop seeing a back cracker.

Thanks guys! Posted the question on FB too and it looks like one of my friends who is crazy in shape (after 2 kids) has the same thing. She thought she was weird. So I guess it isn't as strange as I thought.

    muchas gracias!
