I've been living this lifestyle for 9 months now and will never, ever go back to the way I was. I've learned A LOT about my eating habits and addiction to food. I've called this a journey since last October and no truer words have been spoken from me. I feel so amazingly good, happier and healthier than when I was a teenager or anytime in my 20's.
I'll be turning {a young} 33 this September and I feel like I'm 20 years old in some ways.
The devastation of giving birth to our stillborn daughter one year ago was a major pull for me to get my health and act together. Despite the fact that she is not with us, I am SO happy in my life, my skin and my body....ask Dantheman

I'm down close to 80lbs since I was pregnant with Naomi last July and down just about 50lbs from last October, with more muscle and strength than ever.

I'm tooting my own horn and I don't care!

Although I have a bit more weight to lose, I'm well on my way to the goals I set for myself. So proud.
Woah... condolences and congrats! Massive change.

Well done, Paleo is a great way to go. It worked for me and people made comments all over town and it was cool.

But I stopped working out (Crossfit) and it was very difficult to stay the course. The problem I am having is sugar, cookies and candies and bread has creep-ed back into my life. Many of my friends who did so well are slipping back to their old ways.

Paleo is where it's at and I thrived while eating that way and training. But I am frustrated now.

    Wow, thanks people!
I feel big changes and am now just starting to really see them in my daily life. I've been so used to being big for so long, that this is a new thing for me....and I LOVE it!
And a side note, I eat Primally, not strictly Paleo. Similar, but I eat dairy that agrees with me and beans 1-3 times a month.

Rather Ripped-I hope you can get back to that place of feeling really good. No treat, candy, bread or anything tastes as good as I feel on a daily basis

Feel free to page through the articles at www.gnolls.org/index and start a discussion about any "pseudoscience" you find.

Holy contradictory info. Skipping breakfast will give you a heart attack, but if you're not hungry don't eat. Also:

"And over many years ... it can lead to insulin sensitivity, which can lead to [type-2] diabetes, [and] it can lead to high blood pressure,"
What? You want to be insulin sensitive, and fasting improves insulin sensitivity.

OMG, You look so beautiful! Very nice in blue! I always love seeing paleo transformations. Esp the guys and their abs.

Paleo is the shizznizzle. I've been a foodie forever, never into processed foods and started reading and learning about our wrecked food system, kinda the weston price route. But grains and beans and too many carbs don't work for me, makes my appetite go completely wack, along with not feeling so good. Never been so much into sweets, I prefer to eat fatty and salty food. If I eat the way I enjoy, plenty of meat and some plants on the side, I'm strong and happy, ready to rumble. I do enjoy the dairy every day, but as a german I'm pretty near ground zero for lactase persistense so I don't sweat it. Maybe I'll step off for a month sometime and see if there's a difference.

The real reason I'm posting - I like fermenting. I used to ferment every kind of fruit (country wine) and got pretty good at it. But I'm moving around a lot these days and can't keep up with it for now. So instead I've been keeping a community of sugar (not milk) based kefir going for a few months now. It's a bazillion times stronger than expensive probiotic pills. I just eat a big spoon of the grains every day and don't bother bottling it. But I have so much, and have to send it down the drain, willing to mail to any maggots that want some. Just send me a pm. They are incredibly easy.

Bumping up. So I have had some intestinal issues with colitus and now some knee issues. My PT was talking about grain free(paleo) Thinking Im going to give it a 30 day try. Not looking to loose any weight but sounds like many people have had great success with this diet. Any suggestions for a newbie? I ordered a couple of books but was looking for suggestions. Im also wondering about potatoes and dairy. I could give up dairy but eating no grains or potatoes could be tough. Also what about blood cholesterol. Mine is great now and I know some people say it does not matter but what has yours done since eating paleo?

    Thanks

This was my first exposure to the whole idea of not eating bread etc. and eating meat. I loved the idea, since my wife can't tolerate wheat. I haven't checked in much, and never saw it back up here, but always was planning on looking it up, now that everyone is talking about "Paleo". I only read the first couple pages and don't know shit about skipping breakfast etc but I can say I eat only fruits and veggies and lots of protein and feel great. And it was all because of this thread.

Not sure if I'm doing it right (don't care because I feel great) but anyway there's my testimony.

Just read through a lot of this thread. Pretty confused, seems like most people are eating cheese(thank god) and are eating lots of fatty meat. The books that I have been reading keep on saying lean meat. Also I generally get a ton of exercise. During the summer I run 50+ miles a week(past month Ive been out because of IT band issues) and in the winter 80 days skiing mostly back country and another 80 days nordic skiing. Again loosing weight is not wanted but getting leaner would be nice and just feeling better. Ive been wheat free for a week and feel fine. Its funny how much my diet was dominated by wheat.
    Morning-Bagel
    Lunch- sandwich
Dinner-Huge bowl of pasta and maybe some granola for desert.
When people need to add carbs for high workouts are they adding grain or just potatoes and such?
    Thanks for any advice

Stop running so much, seriously. Speak to a highly qualified trainer, not just a running coach.

I don't know what book you are reading, but you are not even close. Get Rob Wolf's book the Paleo Solution and/or L. Cordain's book, the Paleo Answer. Those will pin it down for you. Then you can modify from there.

No grains!! No beans and legumes and no dairy as in milk and cheese. Aged cheese some say ok and whole cream as well. Try this for 60 days an you will be amazed. But with that kind of distance you may need to increase fruits or some how get more carbs into the diet. Both books talk about that I think.

You mentioned earlier that your knees are bothering you. Do you have an intended outcome from this volume of running? It is not good conditioning, and it may be fucking up your knees. I would like to suggest that you go strict Paleo and get with a serious strength and fitness program. The least it will do is properly condition you for the ski season.

We have many distance runners who have cut back on the mileage and then intensified their workouts with great results. If I say Crossfit that will open the door to criticism, but it really does work. There may be other suggestion that can accomplish the same thing, but my suggestion is a full fitness program that is dedicated to strength training but not a strength only gym.

The problem is that I just love breads...homemade heavy artisan/euro style breads...and I also love yogurts and the occasional croissant. Granted, I've always had a very high metabolism where I can eat pretty much anything and remain lean and for some reason I've always had pretty naturally well-defined tone...that's just genetic.

But I would find it difficult to give up my love of artisan breads and homemade yogurt and the occasional croissant/Nutella completely.

I have gotten into eating lots of raw veggies like cauliflauer..brocolli...spinnich (rhymes with Kucinich)....carrots...snap peas...green beans....lots of sprouts...etc etc...and making mango/guava/banana/berry/sprouts/egg homemade smoothies, though.

I try to do the rice-cake thing instead of bread thing.....but think often that screw-it...I might as well make a wrap with cabbage leaves...which works very well actually!!

And I do eat plenty of moose and other venison....and stay away from store-bought feedlot beef. (Aka - walmart ground beef!!)...and lots of a variety of fish.

I try and keep in my mind the principles of proper food combining: no fruit with grain products.....no dairy with fruit products either....but sometimes such principles get in the way of actually ENJOYING food!!!

And what's the point of eating food (besides sustenance!) if we don't enjoy it?? Might as well eat Soylent Green pellets!!

When I was eating a fairly strict Paleo, I had a hard time doing intense workouts. My typical workout takes about 90 minutes and about 60 minutes of that is intense plyos, weight lifting circuits and conditioning. So two hours before my workout I would eat two bananas or some other fruit and veggies that are higher in carbs. After I would also east some fruit or veggies that are higher in carbs. This allowed me to continue to work out very hard despite eating a small amount of carbs the rest of the time.

All of your running is not helping you get lean nor is it helping your knee. There are well documented cases of people who are relatively low BF and well trained / conditioned who gain body fat when they start long distance training. Rachel Cosgrove is one that comes to mind, her bf% went up when training for an iron man.

Not sure of your individual knee issues, but getting stronger legs and hips usually helps the knees. In a very basic explanation, the stronger your muscles are, the less impact your cartilage will have to absorb. Your quads, hamstrings, calfs, etc all get stronger and will place tension on the knee joint, pulling apart the joint. So when you are running there is less force applied to the cartilage as it is rubbing against cartilage and more of that force is taken by the muscles. If you have any sort of meniscus or arthritis issue, getting stronger will most likely help you. Running is not getting you stronger.

Paleo is good if you want to slim up, and loosing body fat is your primary goal. Problem is, everyone you talk to will have a different definition of what 'Paleo' means. I went 'paleo' for a few months. Yes, I slimmed up, but I was not able to train and build strength like I wanted to. I was simply not getting enough calories, and those I were getting would not stick around long enough to get me through my training. Enter mother fucking milk, rice and oatmeal. Now I eat whatever I want, when ever I want, and am bigger, faster, and stronger than I was before. Sure I got a bit of a pudgy belly, but that cheese cake last night and the brown sugar, raisins, apple, and cinibun protein powder oatmeal this morning were fucking fantastic.

I don't believe that to be true. The way of eating is not limited to any one way of applying the concept. There is no reason that a lack of grains and beans would cause a problem. Increase carbs by way of fruits and veg. It is not necessary to eat grains. Go to yams, cheat 20% or so. Paleo is not always to the "T". But starting off strict and eliminating key foods will give you a look at what the benefits will be. Chances are you will hit a wall 3 to 4 weeks into it, but it will pass.

It's worth a try. My Crossfit community has seen incredible results
