A student dressed as a sheep for a nativity celebration had to strip almost naked when his costume went up in flames.

He was one of 20 people in the guise of wise men, angels, celestial virgins and sheep who were enjoying a night out at a pub.

Firemen were called to the Sports Bar in Broad Street, Birmingham, but by the time they arrived the fire had been put out.

An investigation revealed that one of the group, possibly a wise man, had been messing around with a cigarette lighter and had accidentally set light to the fluffy cotton tail on one of the sheep costumes.

The fire quickly spread to the rest of the costume, and the 18-year-old had to be stripped in the middle of the packed bar.

The fire brigade was called but the fire was out when they arrived.

The teenager, a student at the University of Central England, was taken to hospital suffering from burns to his hands, lower back and bottom.

The victim, who has not been named, declined to comment yesterday after treatment at Birmingham's City Hospital.
