    Maybird TR - 12/4/04

Tom, Xan and myself had a great day out in Maybird. Tom also had his new camera, so we got some nice pictures. We started just after dawn at White Pine trailhead.

Heading into Red Pine, we ran into some monstrous surface hoar in the sheltered locations. The cold dry spell cause a ton of crystalliation.

We headed up the broad, steep ridge just past Red Pine lake, and we got into the sun for the first time that day.

We gained the ridge, and the views made it worthwhile immediately. There was also a 25-30 mph wind blowing out of the Southwest, definitely a sign of things to come in the upcoming week.

    Maybird and LCC looking North:

We skiied a North facing shot in the Maybird cirque. Here's Xan doing his thing:

We decided to make another lap in the cirque before heading down. Here's Xan skiing again on our second lap.

The only other people we saw out there were two heading up to the pfeiff. The sun was behind the cirqe, and the the wind caused them to kick up big plumes of snow that hit the sun just right. It was pretty neat to see, and the picture doesn't really do it justice:

We found some sweet little shots further down in Maybird. The snow was a lot more sheltered down there - very smooth pow. Tom posing in front of one of the lower shots:

It was pretty neat having an entire drainage to ourselves. Definitely a day I'll remember for a while

Yes, it is. Pretty good eye for a non-local.

The NW Couloir of the Pfeif is just over the ridge too. Incredible area.

Nice to finally see the pics Gramps.

Good pics. We were skiing off of Pink Pine Ridge that day. We beat you up, we were the first car in the parking lot last Saturday.

I have a photographic memory for good lines.

Yeah…sweet area for sure. I’ll be making the annual pilgrimage at some point this year.

    Hopefully we can hook up.

Damn, I'm jonesing to get out that way again. Hopefully this ridiculous heat will weld the snowpack together. This high danger rating stuff is no fun...

    Nice report!

Was there a sun crust layer on top or was the whole run powder?
