    Nicest Hotel/Condo in Tahoe?

If you could stay at the nicest place in Tahoe, and money wasn't an option, where would you stay? It could be either North or South Shore, but I need reasons why that particular place is great and why. For instance, I'm not a Heavenly fan, but if there's a truly amazing condo (that has maid service) in that area, I'd like to hear about it. Also, if staying in either North or South, how long a drive to Kirkwood? I do love Squaw and I remember some great places there, but how's the nightlife? Nightlife is as important to this group as the skiing.

It's been a few years since I've been in Tahoe, so I throw this out to you guys - I know you won't disappoint. Thanks much in advance -- LB

    North Shore
Plumpjack or Squaw Creek, both at Squaw

I've stayed at Plumpjack. Pretty sweet, and Squaw has a new village

    South shore....bleh....probably Caesar's

(Edit- Squaw-Kirkweed is at least 1.5-2 hours)

    Hope that helps!

This is an option if you don't mind being slightly out of the way (if I remember correctly it's only a few minutes drive to action nearby, but like 20 or so to Squaw.):

It's right on the lake (northside) and isn't too expensive if you watch for the deals that come through Snowbomb.com every once and awhile. It also has some killer grub spots.

I agree with the Pu, Plumpjack for sure. There's plenty of nightlife in Squaw around the holidays, and I'd guess this is when you'd come with a group. I don't want to start a war, but the north shore is where it's at.

As I was just telling yogachik over in chat, one of the magazines did a story on this Tahoe house a couple years ago that you can rent for some serious bucks. I don't remember exactly where it was. Lots of crazy amenities, but it was sort of '70s style opulence. Like a porn magnate would own or something! Anyway, does anyone know what this might be?

I'm thinking it might have been in everyone's favorite magazine SKI.

The nicest hotel would not actually be in Tahoe but in Reno. It is called The Sands. It has the hottest senior citiizens in the state, a 24/7 diner, lots of nickle slots and tons of second hand smoke. And all for $40 a night.
I was amazed at how light and fluffy the powdery snow was and at how the challenge never ended.

As for South Shore, pm Roo about his pad for the summit last year. That place was cool.

    depends on what you want.

i have only seen pictures of plumpjack on the internet, but i don't think there is anything that nice on the south shore.

nightlife is kind of a no contest. south shore has the casinos, night clubs, comedy shows, some 'decent' acts, bars, pubs, etc....

both have good restaraunts, in fact, both have very very good and expensive restaraunts.

    heavenly has killer views.

squaw and alpine have the best terrain.

kirkwood has the "lightest, deepest snow in the tahoe area"

south shore is more of a town that happens to be in the mountains, tahoe city and truckee are mountain towns.

I would rather live in south lake but if i was visiting and i had cash to burn i would go to north lake.

There are some crazy pads in Olympic Valley (Squaw) and along the road to Alpine, and many pimped out places along 89 south of Tahoe City. Call a Tahoe City real estate agent, and tell them you want to go big.

squaws definately the place to kick it and ride, so stay in northshore for sure, but the best nightlife is in southshore (not that northshore has bad nightlife, just better in south)... these guys have pretty much covered all the good places to stay (plumjack, squaw creek, etc..) but if you want to go the route of renting a sick house, there are a lot of people with houses in Tahoe Donner that are rich and almost never there (bay area folks) who will gladly rent out their home. talk to a real estate agent 'bout that one.

I think if you want something super nice, you'll do well to check out individual vacation rental homes.

"The Ridge Tahoe" in Stateline is a complex that I hear is very nice. It looks expensive, but I haven't been inside to see firsthand. It's in an awesome location - on the top of the crest between tahoe and the carson valley - utterly amazing views. They even have thier own private gondola to get to & from the stagecoach run on Heavenly's nevada side. They're about 40 minutes from kirkwood.

There are a number of very nice houses to rent in Tahoe on www.vrbo.com but I think the Marriott Grand Residence in South Lake is a decent place and very convenient for both Quiznos and the gondy. Valet parking and liveried flunkies everywhere.

This is true, stayed up here for the Summit and thought it was a pretty good spot. You have to do some driving, but it's only 15 minutes to Squaw and 23 to Alpine. The place we stayed in was pretty nice, but money was something of an object, so we didn't go too huge. For instance, we didn't have a hot tub- fortunately, the people next door did, and didn't decide to come up that week.

Second Roo's VRBO plug- that's where we found our place; tons of stuff on that website, from high-end to budget.
