I love to rapel. It is the climbing up that scares me for some reason anymore, the height getting larger on the way up. Maybe hit the wall on a lead one too many times.

But I have no problem rapelling.

What is the psychology of this? Same heights, yet going up is more scary.

That last pic is so good it is "save target as"!!!

This was from last year right?

Exact opposite with me. I hate having all my weight on the rope. The most terrifying moment of any climb is normally when I lean back into the rope and start descending. Even if the anchor is a bazillion solid bolts, I just don't like trusting everything to gear.

    ps - awesome pics!

I am in favor of getting into tight slots.

    Nice pics.

If you look really close in the first picture, you can see Aaron cutting his arm off with a pocket knife.

Only went up Ding, twas all the children could handle. Knew the wild horse, had snow on the brain, . I've got my eye on a few more down Hole in the Rock. Planned on doing Egypt 3 and Davis Gulch a couple years ago, after an epic in Egypt we shelved Davis. I still want to make it back down there...

Egypt 3? Never heard of that one. IS it off the Egypt trailhead? Spent some time there and am looking to go back in May to rap through the great cathedral into Neon canyon and camp out for a few days. hopefully this time, we will make it through Ringtail. We were to wet to amke it up an upclimb and one of our party members was abit to large to make it through. Need headlamps for this one.

My camera died at the beginning of my trip to Hole in the Rock. But here are some from other locations:

Do canyons have ratings associated with them according to the narrowest slot encountered? Also, what do you do if you are in the canyon and there is a flash flood? Are there any safety measures you can take? I've never done any canyoning but it looks fun and a little scary. Do you get claustrophobic? The thing I love about climbing is the open air and the huge vistas that expand as you get higher and higher, what's the canyoning equivalent of that.

    Great pics by the way!

    Spats...Death Valley?

like to ski...the canyons are rated but not according to width but to how technical and difficult they are..which includes width. Can't remember the rating system off the top of my head..maybe trackhead knows?

Flash flood? Hopefully you ar smart enough not to encounter one. I really wouldn't know what to do except stick my head between my legs and kiss my ass good bye.

When I play in these slots, i try and always look around for exit routes in case of floods or injury. Floods...if you hear one coming..climb up and cimb fast if you can.

I did get stuck last year in one for 5 minutes and was definitely like 'get me the fukk out of here' It does happen but it all depends on the person and situation. Canyoneering is fun as hell but can be or get to one of the worst situations ever.

    Link for ratings information

Stoy, yeah, Egypt3 is off the Egypt trailhead. Pretty cool slot, fairly long with much more sustained narrows than Spooky. There are parts about 100 yards long and less than a foot wide.

A friend and I drove all night down to Hole in the Rock, got there just as the sun was coming up. Rather than take a short nap and go, we decided to go without sleep. The canyon was super cool, drank my water all the way through, saving friends water for the hike back. It wasn't till I was out of water and we were at the end of the canyon before we noticed my friend had stepped on the bite valve of his camelback, therefore tearing it off and losing all our water. We made the hike out in the BLAZING sun with no water whatsoever. There is NO shade on the hike out, I started to get dizzy and wanted to do nothing other than lay down. Once we made it to the truck we were done with slots for the weekend.

Yep. First photo is Buckskin in UT, the other two are Fall and Red Wall in DV. We hiked a few more but I have plenty of unfinished business in the park.

Now that I have some climbing and rappelling experience I'm really looking forward to getting out and doing some technical slots...let me know if you've got trips planned and don't mind a guest. (BobMc, Trackhead, this goes for you too.) I have beta for Maze District, Buckskin/Paria/Coyote Buttes, and a bunch of slots you've probably already seen.
