6000 vert ft ski resort approved in BC

VICTORIA - The provincial government has approved plans for the expansion of Revelstoke's Mt. MacKenzie ski hill into a new all-season resort.

The $270-million project includes more than 16,000 beds, full guest service facilities, an 18-hole golf course, a multi-use trail system, 25 lifts and 100 ski and snowboard trails.

It will have the fourth-highest vertical ski drop in the world – 1,945 metres, which is more vertical than Whistler.

The new Mt. MacKenzie resort will be about one-third the size of Whistler, and comparable to the Big White and Sun Peaks resorts. "

I know this place has been talked about for years but it does have some pretty amazing terrain. http://www.catpowder.com/images/cat-12.jpg

yeah, heard this on the way into work this AM on the CBC. I'd kinda forgotten about that place...those pics look sweet.

Makes sense to put a big hill there from a snowfall poiunt of view (prolly one of the most reliable places for snow in BC), but i wonder where the people will come from.

There's got to be loads of Euro resorts with more than 1945m vert. I can think of Zermatt, Tignes, Argentiere, Les Deux Alpes, Les Arcs, La Plagne, Alpe d'Huez and La Grave right off the bat.

Long ways from an airport over Rogers Pass, not a real appealing drive for the average tourist.

Yeah its far from Calgary ~ 5 hours and about the same from Vancouver??? Plus from Calgary got to cross Rodgers pass. A train service from Calgary would be sweet.

Yes the vert is just a number for marketing but it does get a lot of snow. Skied the Cat operation there last year. Did the ski out to the little 1000ft vert ski hill at base. As its a cat road coun't really tell if bottom half of moutain was that skiable or just a long green /blue.

This makes more sense to me than the Jumbo project. They are already skiing there with both snowcat at the top and the lift down lower. Its right next to Revelstoke so they don't have to build all the infrastructure roads etc, and it just gets butt loads of snow. I'll visit for sure!

Not too bad a drive from Kamloops, though.

Actually, the hill was already there. I've skied at Powder Springs (the existing ski area). I didn't realize there was that much more up.

Revelstoke is 516km from Vancouver and 383km from Calgary.

Strange - we're writing to stop development at Wolf Creek in another thread.

Don't know enough about either project to make judgement.

Yeah I was thinking about the irony in this myself. But they do sound like pretty different situations. Development isn't necessarily bad at all costs Blurred, Wolf Creek is a pretty unique situation.

Revelstoke has been reviewed for years for this operation. Wolf Creek is a deal done by the wealthy manipulating Congress and the USFS for a quick deal being rammed through without the public comment period.

    They're really different deals.

So you're okay if they cut down thousands of trees, and take away wildlife habitat for many species of animals as long as it's been brought to your attention.....gotcha.

And if they don't come,at least they'll breathe hard.

Canada is a huge country with 1/10 the population of the U.S.,and as such is relatively undeveloped.Besides,as hard as we're squeezing them on the soft lumber angle they need to do something for revenue.

No, you misconstrue this situation. As usual.

I had no idea that you're such an environmental crusader.

Development is going to happen no matter what. Development that takes into account public opinion and is deemed to be in the best interest of a community may not necessarily be bad. At least in Revelstoke they took the time to allow the public to comment and the environmental impacts to be studied.

In short they are two different situations.

I'm not a crusader, I just think it's funny that so many "outdoorsie types" (usually from big cities in the East that have recently moved out here to the West) hop on this trendy bandwagon of "saving the enviroment", but only if it doesn't help them. When it does, they're all for it. What a hypocritically pathetic state of mind.

At Wolf Creek the environmental degredation is just the icing on the cake in a shitty deal brokered by people too rich and powerfrul to be bothered with public sentiment.
