I think beans and lentils are good sources of protein.

Good point on the beans and lentils. Cheap too.

And I forgot to mention that the study I referenced on protein also says that if you're training at elevation you need up to 2.2g/kg/day. So that's something to keep in mind too.

Eggs, beans, canned tuna, milk, nuts, tons of places to get protein. Protein-wise, there really isn't any difference between getting the protein from a natural source, or from the powders.

Hey C- Sounds like you're doing well with the PT on the knee. Anyway, I'm also trying to avoid the artificial sweeteners and trans-fats and was wondering what protein powder you're using. The stuff I like taste-wise (EAS) has any combination of partially hydrogenated fats, aspartame, stevia, etc. I did try Spiru-tein and thought that was OK. Any recommendations?
Because rich has nothing to do with money.

I was led to believe that there is an 'index' that is based upon how easy the body is able to get the protein into the obdy. I think 100 was the ideal protein score and it equates to a raw egg and how easy it is to absorb the protein. It is already soft and very protein laden so the body does not ahve to break it down to get it as opposed to a steak which has an index value around 65-75 (I can't remember). A chicken breast is around 85ish but protein powders are all over 100 easily - their values escape me, this is from over 4 years ago.

The powders are especially great for Joe gym guy with those terrible balloon pants who can't eat enough steaks in a day and still work out properly. The reccommended 2g/kg BW is just to maintain muscle mass whereas if you wish to build more muscle you need more than double that (so said the nutritionist)- that is a lot of steaks - or 'roids, or both.

Raw egg is fantastic and cheap - just crack a couple into a fruit shake and away you go. A banana usually drowns the taste of the egg.
Recently overheard: "Hey Ralph, what were you drinking that time that you set your face on fire?"

    Thanks!

I use ON's (Optimum Nutrition's) 100% Natural Whey protein. It's just sweetened with Fructose - very few ingredients compared to most. I tried Spiru-tein once but it ends up really thick - I like the ON whey protein since it dissolves nicely in oatmeal or soy milk or whatever.

Oh - and Stevia is actually natural - it's just a plant extract, unlike aspartame and splenda and all of that chemically made crap.
