Focal length doubles as does your minimum aperture, ex. 2.8 would be a 5.6 with the TC. I use the 1.4 TC a lot with very little loss of IQ. The 2x TC require lots of light and stopping down more. It still autofocuses but not as quickly. I picked up the newer version of the 2x TC, it yields slightly better IQ, more than anything it pushes my 300 f/4 out to an effective 900mm on a crop body.
If interested - check out nikon's website, it only works on certain nikon lenses.
