    Looking for technique/setup advice.

Started tele last year, I can do it but not well. I've got the straight front leg, floppy back ski problem that seems common among new tele skiers. I cannot seem to figure out how to get pressure on the tongue of the front ski. As soon as I try I lose balance and wash out. I'm using hammerheads in the 4 setting, would a different setting help? I have T1s that I started out with that fit well but don't bend as much as the garmonts I've swapped to this year. Any advice is appreciated

when junior was 14 I got him some 50$ leatehr asolo extremes/ riva II/ Tua cirques and taught him to tele in 3 short T-bar runs

" I said OK down hill hand reaching downhill

( absence of downhill hand reaching DH pressuring that DH ski might be your problem ??)

OK move the right ski back and leave it like that so now do all yer turns with that ski back , don't move the ski when you turn leftthe other way

OK go back to the top, now do turns with the left ski back, don't move the ski when you turn

OK go back to top, now alternate moving the skis back with each turn, right ski when you turn right/ left ski when you turn left "

Ok I got it lets go skiing sez junior and proceeds to get air

It’s really not that different than an alpine turn in terms of the physics. You must dorsiflex both ankles, always pressure on the boot tongue. Don’t get too spread out or too low, that’s a relic from non supportive xc gear. It’s not a lunge, it’s more like a split leg squat. Keep that rear foot under your butt, hips tucked and core engaged. I always knew I was doing it right at the beginning of the season because my abs and glutes got a workout.

First step: get rid of skis with tongues.
Then tighten up stance - try to keep the gap between leading heel and trailing toe under 6".
Then stand taller - if your front thigh is perpendicular to your lower leg, you're waaaaaay too low.
Then do XXX-er's drills for at least a couple of days, because you're older and more resistant to learning than a teen ager.

This is kind of where I'm at. Front ski is doing most of the work, back ski is trailing behind and trying to get into a pizza wedge with the front.

Turning both ways is interesting, I'll try that soon.

I've just been keeping hands and poles out front like I would for normal skiing. Click image for larger version.

yeah stand tall, skis should be PARALLEL the ski should turn by you putting the bend in it so you should NOT be steming to turn which doesnt seem to work for you anyhow, ,

minimal boot seperation its really just about which boot is slight forward so don't be doing no poodle turns

also get good dope and no taking showers

    Telemark skiing is dead.

You should really not look much different than someone making alpine turns from the waist up.

A good mix of tele and alpine skiers in that video. I tried to not have much if any separation of my knees, front to back, and try for no more than a boot length between boots.

It's hard to internet coach, but it sounds like you're not weighting the rear ski enough and your front leg is going into a bracing position. Look up drills to get the back ski weighted - there are a lot of them, from Allen & Mike's Telemark Tips book to online videos. As others have said, you want your feet under you (and your downhill leg may be getting out in front).

and the answer is pretty much always “more weight on the back foot”

That's what I suspected. I definitely need to find a better weight distribution, and pressure at the tongues of both boots.

I have the Allen and Mike's book and have been reviewing it, just feeling like I haven't been able to progress much lately.

    weight both feet always

you need to find your center

sometimes it’s 50/50 sometimes ya gotta fudge on either foot

but if you don’t weight your back foot you’re going to have a bad time

Head back to the bunny slope until you are getting your downhill knee over the toe (pressure the tongue). A good drill is to lift your toes to the top of your boot. This actually works for your uphill leg as well as it will help you flexor that ankle.
