actually, I should probably buy a probe, as I don't have a proper one yet. Also a fully-functional tranciever would be great - my current one is broadcast-only (so, I guess it's just a transmitter, right?), as my other one is down for the count. Kinda forgot to send it in on warranty over the summer......

backcountry gear= brain, beeper, shovel, probe, parter, knowledge of terrain and snowpack, brain, and common sense. Skins and trekkers aren't necessary for everything but it doesn't hurt to have them and they don't weigh that much. Water and food doesn't hurt either.

For the record, I wasn't THAT close to the sheriff! I was trying to maintain my speed going uphill and he was slowing down faster than I was. If I wasn't hauling WC's fat ass and he could have held his beers a bit longer none of this would have happened, but whatever. All is well because the dealer that I bought my car from fucked up and told me the reg. was valid when I bought it (they don't sell cars w/o valid tabs) and are going to pay the ticket.

So at what point did it occur to you, as you are humping his bumper, that those lights on top of his car and the big fat WHATCOM COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPUTY written on the trunk weren't in fact the latest trend in pimping your ride?
On a more serious note, as someone who prosecutes people for minor infractions like this- get a court date, get a written statement from the dealer, get new tags BEFORE your court date, and prepare to beg and I bet you anything you will get the ticket either reduced or dropped.

I knew it was the sheriff when I pulled out of the Glacier ski shop PL. I maintain that I wasn't overly close to his bumper, esp. given where we were on the road. But oh well. He thought I was too close and turned on his lights, and what am I supposed to do? Take off into the woods as WC suggested?

You know Hop, given the hour and the type of vehicle you were driving, I'm sure he used the alleged 'tailgating' as an excuse to pull you over and do a sobriety check, warrant check, check for possible drugs, etc...

you wouldn't be the first car full of skiers to get pulled over drunk, with warrants, or drugs, or all three.

however, the ticket for the registration is just nit-picking. maybe he just wanted to make the county some money...
