WWMD: University of Utah

I'm almost positive I'm going to go to shcool here, but i just wanted to hear what a maggot's perspective of it first. How many of you are Alumni or currently attending? I'm currently thinking about going into the Engineering program (a lot of work I know). I read some about it in Max Gosey's thread, but that was more like where should I apply. This is more like I'm plannin on going.

Good choice, PW. I'm a junior here, and it's really a pretty sweet setup. You'll be giving up some of the traditional college experience to be able to live within an hour of world class skiing. It's a major research institution with a lot of majors to pick from. Student life sucks, but you'll get to know the people that count - ski partners. Not too many places where you can go ski world class snow and terrain in the morning, go to class in the afternoon, and catch a famous speaker or something of that sort in the evening. I'd be happy to answer any questions. If you read the Max college threads, you've probably already heard me lay out my case for the U.

Do it! Graduated from the U this past May. It's a commuter school. You go skiing, go to class, then go home. Or, you go to class, go skiing, then go home. I spent as little time as possible there...it's so close to skiing, you'll love it.

currently a grad student, if you're considering engineering you might be in one my classes. I don't really know what it's like to be an undergrad here, but the campus is pretty dead. I think the student pass at alta was $399, so mine has just about paid for itself. I would also recommend afternoon classes.

IF YOUR GOING TO DO ENGINEERING...how old are you? Did you have Calculus and Chemistry in High School (or other)???? The counselors/advisors tell you to hit the classes running by taking a huge load with Chem and Calc. If you haven't had adequate prep. I would recomend taking one or the other along with a enough of a class load to get your feet wet. It can be a good school but it isn't a place for much interaction. Like AC and others have said...the campus is dead. Work hard or don't enter this major. It's too expensive to waste your time half-assing it.

you don't know engineers that well. Unless its formula syntax, it doesn't matter.

Bro- I am a graduate of the U. Its all what you make of it...If you want to party and booze it, it is there you just have to look a little harder than at most schools...The campus is quieter than at most schools but the people who live around capus all know each other so it's cool and most are not LDS...but if you want to go into engineering then you won't be skiing much...

Ding Ding! Unless you want to spend many years in school. Speaking as an engineer, it's a good education and a shitty career. Sales, Accounting, Law, all pay better with better hours, benes, and work opportunities.

State schools, more so than private schools, are exactly what you put into them.

Well then, what the hell should I do with my life? I hate selling shit, I could be a lawyer, but that takes lots of school. I think it pays off though. Accounting seems boring! Well Engineering can be too, but its mor than just numbers and money... Any other good suggestions? I could go to school for a while and eventually become a prof...

I'm doing Biology. You're not really making any life decisions by majoring in it, you don't feel like you're in some bullshit major, but it's not near as bad as engineering...

have you thought about geology as a major? Careers ranging from environmental protection to oil exploration and everything in between. If you find earth sciences at all interesting, take a look into it. It takes some time but it has it's rewards. (plus who the hell do you think studies the mtns in the first place)

Senior in Finance in the David Eccles School of BIZ here, not a bad place at all really. The access to skiing has already been mentioned enough here so I won't talk about that, but I will talk about our excellent foosball team with a great coach.... urrrr wait a minute, hey that bastard!

I'm a junior in the enviro studies program (not sure if its the choice for career advancement) the U's "college experience" is a let down but the class selection is awesome with tons of research opportunities. great access for a bike commuter who works full time....

yeah 60+ hour workweeks from Jan through April don't cut back on your skiing time.

I do find it pretty interesting and entertaining most of the time. As for advice I've never once regretted my decision to go to the U. Of course there are some people who just don't adjust to moving away from their family and friends and the commuter style campus doesn't help them at all.

WOW, I'm a U grad and a geo major so that probably makes me a double loser. I loved Utah, there is alot more than skiing but not much on the partying. If you really want a great college expereince go to the Y, thats where all the chicks are in Utah.
