    Lake surfers are nutz...

A couple of pictures from my buddy Ryan, owner of Third Coast Surf Shop from the other day. I love surfing as much as the next guy, and I'm always game to get after the swells that roll in from June through late September or early October, but there is a large population of core surfers in the lakes that will don the 6/5/4 with 7mm boots and gloves to get after the best waves all year round.

I've known Ryan for the better part of 8 years, and this kid is a surfer through and through. Moved back from Santa Cruz to go to NMU and then opened up Third Coast after finishing school. I'll wager that their isn't another guy on the lakes with the knowledge of where to go when the wind is blowing in any given direction that Ryan has. He's done his homework that's for sure.

I would guess that these waves are around head high.

Here's Ryan....doesn't this make you just wanna get out there and get after it??

Yeah, I didn't think so. I guess this was after an hour and a half in the water.

I've got that gear and I still shut it down soon after Halloween.

I used to know a crazy guy who would go windsurfing in the warm water exhaust of the powerstation at the mouth of the Fox River on Green Bay after the rest of the bay completely froze over.

Agreed - those guys are insane. How many weeks did Ryan's face stay like that?

This was posted to FB today. I would assume that he is just now beginning to regain feeling/movement in his face.

Jer, are you gonna be skiing CO or Utardia this winter? If so, give a shout, I'm moving to Denver tomorrow.

edit: I should really tell them that there's pow to be ridden doncha think?

I'm visiting my fams on Lake Superior for the first time since I've been surfing. I flew here and obviously have no gear. I got here and found that there are legit rideable lefts happening on a sandstone shelf right in front of mom's house. Casualties in Marquette wouldn't rent/loan me any gear. They said they had a post-october policy and lots of people drown etc etc. Nice guy there made a half-hearted effort to sell me a SUP.

I would have gotten it done for sure if I could have found some gear.

I really feel more and more like I'm going to move back to the UP when job/career allows me.

"Cleveland Ohio Surfers surf beaches of Lake Erie. What I learned from, unlike in the west and the east coast of the United States, where the waves are pulled currents, the wind is what makes even the waves of Lake Erie. Solito when it is cold surf, windy and wet, and stormy, or just before the lake freezes. They have wetsuits to keep warm, so that the situation tolerable. I was cold today. They'll be back often, as the waves are just right. When the calculator 15 Sometimes I stop and park in front of the hill to see them run. "
