I was going to write something meaningful and informative here, but couldn't think of what to say. So I'll just go and say don't do it, and, Yes it's hella gay.

Then I read what Char wrote. this is really what I meant to say. He put it so well that I thought I'd just re-print it onto this page, too.

Don't do it. There's many better coffee shops in town, and nobody hates the other shops.

I dislike the culture surrounding Starbucks. The semi-elitist, SUV driving, soccermom crowd. Or in the case of the Starbucks on the Ave, the frat/sororiety, semi-elitist, look at my fancy clothes bullshit that seems to be present there.

We can stop admiring them when they lose sight of their roots. I personally think Starbucks has.

I guess it boils down to the fact that I don't like the vibe in Starbucks, never have, never will. And I like to support small, local business because I feel that the level of service and quality of goods I recieve is better.

Well, since we can't call you 'Pizza Boy' or 'Pepperoni' anymore.....'Latte' would be a nice change.

In any case - I ask again: What is this line we draw re: positive vs. negative when a business is expanding? That is to say, when do we stop admiring them for doing well and who gets to decide? Do we put a cap on expansion just like we do on building? What about free enterprise?
Nothing wrong with free enterprise, but in SoCal during the 90s the Starbuck's business model was to go into a location already served by an existing coffee joint, bakery or doughnut shop and then take most of the customers away. And by location, I'm talking about across the street or the opposite corner of the same block. It was/is a predatory method of operation.

Regardless of the quality, people will flock to Starbucks just like they will to Krispy Kreme, etc. because of the name. Great business model. What sucks, though, is that they put the competition out of business and change the "flavor" of a given neighborhood. I've seen numerous places in Los Angeles and San Diego meet their demise because they could not compete with Starbucks.

That was 10 years ago and, now, Starbucks seems to have boosted the competition by helping to foster a more coffee-savy consumer with a developed taste or preference.

Cap on expansion happens...but I doubt we'll see antitrust action on Starbucks anytime soon.

I'd consider this a negative. Definitely negative.

No one is forcing customers to go to the Starbucks, though. Why blame Starbucks for Joe Consumer's herd mentality? I think it's crazy how many Starbucks there are, but I can't really fault them. That's free enterprise.

The model is to take an established customer base and put the competitor out of business. I never said that there was anything wrong with this per se- it's good business afterall.

However, I don't care much for Starbucks and I've seen places that I do like (coffee joints, a bakery, and even an Italian deli) hurt or put out of business by Starbuck's style of expansion. So, pursuant to KQ's question, I've decided that it's bad. So there.

.....as long as you make me nice Americanos with lots of crema from the espresso, its not gay. If you try to sell me some of your frozen pastries...that's gay. Depends what kind of gay you're looking at.

I'd say with all the bene's you can get through that corporate juggernaut, it'd be a nice why to earn some income in a ski town.

...by being near the casinos, you may get ALOT of extra tips, much better than the one say the one at the Y.

    This is interesting.

How have they lost sight of their roots? What were those roots?

It seems to me they introduced most of the country to a product they were unfamiliar with, and did it well enough that they're well-received (in terms of dollars spect) nearly every time they open a new location.

I walk past no less than ten coffee shops on my way to work every day. I've tried them all, some many times, and now get my (drip/americano) coffee at Starbucks every day. I agree that on average the smaller shops have better coffee, but there are some other factors (cost, attitude - which I think in general the small shops in Seattle dish out much more readily than starbucks, etc.).

It's interesting how people decide to hate a business when it becomes successful. I understand the thinking when there are questionable practices contributing to the success, but if that's the case w/Starbucks I'm not aware of said practices. I don't know many other businesses that offer full benefits to part-time employees. That's pretty good.

Yes, they put small shops out of business, but that's the small shop's fault. If you're losing business to a competitor, you improve or you die, it's really simple. The market decides, not the businesses.

All that stuff about SUVs and fancy clothes is a little crazy. I know what you're talkking about, but if you're deciding you don't like someone or assuming you know their "type" because of their clothes, you're being more superficial than them.

Rider...KQ and others are right w/ respects to the Benefits, specifically the health insurance. That alone may make it worthwhile.

Others...Interestingly, I read an article awhile back in the Journal that indicated that for some, drinking Starbucks is an introduction to "better" coffee and in some cases increases a drinker's sophistication level and may actually contribute to a desire to move to a non-starbucks/even more specialty locally owned coffee house....of course that's coming from the Journal, a super pro "corp" source.

    Bwahaha

HR and I actually saw him rocking those things before Although as soon as the mogul comp was over he kept complaining about them, but we all know he loves em!

Righty, when are you heading out there? maybe we will be out at the sametime (although it would be lame to only ski together on the other side of the country since we have passes to the same mtn, back here)
