Question Volkl Karma mounting zero location...where is it?!

I just got my 177 Karma's and have been looking for the low down on where exactly the mounting zero is on this ski. I have found no markings on them at all, save for the letter I printed on the sidewall next a product number / serial number or something.

The tech's here in town are stumped too (they claim to be a volkl dealer) They offered to call volkl before they mount, but I would like to know whats up from you guys too.

Does anyone out there know from first hand experence where the zero is on this ski?!?

I know there are some experienced ski tech's here, surely someone here has gone through this too.

Before I get Jonged... I have searched the forums here up and down, Volkls web site (shit tacular), my local "volkl" dealer, and of course google.

I'm gonna throw some brand spankin Solly S912 Ti's on them as soon as I get this figured out. I want to know where the zero is so I can decided whether or not I want to mount forward or not.

    Thanks in advance!

I just mounted my bindings there, skied 4 days and thought they were sweet. You will love the skis.

    Awesome, thanks guys!

Truckee Joe, do you ride and land switch much? It's not something I do all day long, but I do enjoy it.

What kind of riding did you do with them?

I'm really looking forward to them, I fall asleep with them at the foot of my bed :-).

Thanks for all the awesome quick replys.

With these skis over thanksgiving I increased my switch riding a lot. The sidecut of the skis seems beneficial to switch riding I think. I think center mounting is only a good idea if you like to ride rails (which i never do to my edges)

I ride big mountain style, fast perfect C shaped turns (also helped by the deep sidecut.) Take note how much thinner the tails are compared to the tips.

They are stable at speed and easy to throw around during the occasional 360.

Volkl got it right when they said “The Karma is for the skier that wants the freedom to do a little of everything.”

    took my karmas in

Took the my new 177 karmas into the shop today, they confirmed that the mounting point is the letter I on the side wall of the ski. (just as you guys told me).

I think this is way to far back for me, it would make them ROCK as all mountain skis, but I do alot of screwing around and those short ass tails make me kinda iffy on the suggested mounting location. I really enjoy the stability of my pocket rocket's longer tails when landing, both switch and regular.

Local tech is going to call Volkl on monday and we will see what they have to say. I'm thinking I will mount atleast 2 or 3cm forward of the zero.

For those of you interested, there is a pic of mounted Karmas up on ebay, maybe you can see what I mean:

    Will keep yall posted.

Volkl's traditionally have rearward mounting positions. If you were going to do much park skiing, I'd definitely go 1-2cm forward. A more center-mount helps with switch stuff, rails and spinning.

I've got the 185 Karma and I went forward 2 cm since they will primarily be my park ski. I haven't skied them yet as I've somehow managed to be on my spatulas every day this year, but if you are going to use them for park I'd go forward a few cm. It shouldn't kill the all mtn. performance and it'll make them a lot easier to spin and ski switch on.

Thumbs down Got MAJOR HARD FUCKING

    GOD DAMN IT.....

The shop mounted my volkls at zero....when i specifically asked them to call me before they mounted so we could make sure they were mounting in the right spot. (2cm forward)...FUCK...I even spoke with the manager before mounting to make sure this happend..he assured me that he would call me himself..there was a tag on the damn skis....

Now my karmas have just as much ski infront of the the boot as my 185 pocket rockets. I bought the 177 karmas as a all-mountain ski, but i really like to ride and land switch .... thus the shorter length and 2cm forward... take a look at the ebay photos above to see just how far back you sit on them at zero...

What do i do guys? Do I have the shop remount them? Ask for new skis? Or just live with it? The manager was not in at the time, and the ski tech told me they were going to call volkl about it. Lot of good that does now that they are fucking drilled already....

These are wood core so if the holes are not patched correctly they will rot. Sucks because I'm sure no one has had to remount Karmas yet, so there is no really telling how the ski will hold up after more holes are drilled. What will this do to a warranty if i remount?

That sucks. Sounds like you do have a case to get a free remount since they didn't do what you asked. I wouldn't worry about the holes. However, considering they are already mounted, you may want to give them a shot as is, you might like them.

I ski Supersport 6* 182's and love them on the line, but i don't usually attempt to ride switch at speed with them either.

LSB, what ever came of this? Was it Fine Edge?

    (my opinion of F.E. ---> )

    Did they ever remount?

You can take them over to Leo at Big Hoss. I believe he has the jigs.

There was some definate miscommunication, and i can't fault FE for the whole deal. I went in on two seperate occations, the first time I said just mount them on the line. Walked back in to the shop after sitting in my truck for 5 seconds, and told the main tech (you know whom I speakith) that I would like to have him call volkl with my intentions for the ski and then call me before he mounted.

That didnt happen - I tried them at the I mark, and love them as an all mountain ski there. But my intentions for them were more for screwing around, and having the mount at the I mark means the center of gravity for the ski is closer to my heel than the balls of my feet. Riding switch is ok at that mount, but landing switch is a different matter, especially if the landing is not packed out.

I have beat the snot out of them and used them as my primary ski (approx 30 days), unless more than 3 or 4" fell. They have held up extremely well to both park, bump, and trees. The 1/2 metal sheet along the top of both edges really helps with the duribility I think - be careful though, as I have started packing tweezers to get the damn burs out of my fingers when i handle my skis.

i know much much more about mounting and importance of selecting the right location now because of all this and now realize the only real answer to this question that comes up on the boards every other day is: Demo, demo, demo and then think about what your really going to do with the ski. Don't go out and spend mucho dinero on skis and then be to god damn cheap to demo a pair.

Oh, and FE also forgot to remove one of the feet on the binders, so it looked like my right toe piece wasn't screwed in. I took it in and they poped off the plastic feet and screwed it back down.

My expereince with FE previous to this has been pretty postitive. I know kids on both the UW and HS ski teams trust them with their skis, and after talking it over with them it would seem that has always been the case.

That backcountry store on 2nd street has HOOKED ME UP in the past. Those guys are awesome. About a year ago I got skins (low fats), trekkers (they busted a few weekends ago), BCA probe and beacon for something like $450.

Spring corn in the 'Bows soon! be there!

Bumping this old thread with a question: Where is the Boot Center Mount Mark? I've got some old Karmas that have the I completely worn off. Any help on "distance from tip/tail" would be sweet.

Edit for more info: The skis in question are the same 177's as described in original post.

Just take them to Fine Edge in Laramie and ask for the main tech. He'll hook you up.
