Is the AFLAC duck playing a comedic or dramatic role?

You sure Carrey isn't playing the duck?

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- The fussy duck featured in commercials for insurer AFLAC is slated to pop up in "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events" and a series of ads promoting the movie.

Director Brad Silberling sought out the insurance company's mascot, known for delivering insistent shouts of "AFLAC!" in TV commercials, as a way to add comic relief in one of the scenes in the film, Al Johnson, AFLAC's vice president of advertising and branding, said this week.

In the upcoming movie, starring Jim Carrey, Meryl Streep and Jude Law, the duck is shown being launched off a boat. But that's as far as the in-movie product placement will go. The duck will be identifiable, but it won't be heard yelling its usual AFLAC plug, Johnson said.

Johnson said the company liked the implicit message. "This is what AFLAC is all about: being there for people when unfortunate events happen," he said.

The insurer also has agreed to spend $5 million to promote the Paramount Pictures film, which is based on the first three books in the Lemony Snicket children's series. The ads are scheduled to begin airing later this month.

"Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events" opens in theaters December 17

That must have been one seriously unfunny scene.

While I think the movie looks interesting and potentially funny, I have to ask what's with the blatant Tim Burton rip off look. Who are they kidding?

I didn't suck by any means. I thought it was creative and funny. The AFLAC duck scene was half a second, and he didn't say "AFLAC". I woudn't have known it was that duck if it weren't for this thread. I didn't feel like I was watching a Tim Burton rip off either. Though, the costumes and darkness were definitely similar.

The characters and plot were very creative, but it felt like it was lacking something. It sort of felt incomplete, like there could have been a more thorough explanation of the underlying story (and supporting characters). Worth watching, but a video rental for sure.
