    Homemade helmet ventilation

    Hey,

Was wondeing if anyone has tried adding some ventilation ducts to their helmet?
I have an older Leedom helmet that has some pretty shitty ventilation and was thinking of taking the trusty dremel to it to add a few more ventilation ducts. However, I am concerned regarding how this will affect structural integrity of the helmet. Unfortunately I don't know the model of helmet, but it is a full coverage helmet with this slider thing on the top that opens and closes a vent that is at the leading edge of face opening. It has a partially transparent plastic shell with a styrofoam liner. I'm thinking of making probably two openings on the top of the helmet about 2 cm x 3 cm to add to the air flow and to make a place for my nightrider helmet mount to attach for a little night skiing.

I suspect this may be a stupid idea and I should just sack up and buy a new helmet, but if I can make this one work, save a little money, and still have a safe helmet, why not?

    Or a drill. That's what I used.

I wouldn't modify a helmet. Drilling a few holes in the shell could very well weaken the protective value of the helmet. How much is your head worth to you?

I have two helmets. One is a full Vigor w/ a face bar in front for colder weather days and added protection. The other is a Giro 9, which has great ventilation, for warmer days. If the Giro 9 is a good fit for you, I would recommend getting one.

Plakespear, you're right, but the man has the urge to tinker

If I understand which one he's wearing, that particular helmet already has a great big honker of a hole in the back of the head for the silly molded-in goggle strap retainer. Why not put some test holes in the styrofoam underneath that to start with, say with a trash soldering iron? No drilling the shell at all. And epoxy on some real goggle strap holders while he's at it.

Speaking of epoxy, he can always devise a light mount external to the shell.

    I say drill the holes.

And then test it out with a sledge. See how it holds up and report back to us

He should be wearing the helmet at the time, right?

    helmet vents

So I was looking at the REI-outlet website and saw that the helmet I have is the Leedom Scream...and I noticed the Leedom Scream Cut, which esentially looks like my helmet with extra vent holes cut in it. I don't see any extra material on the Cut vs. the un-cut versions which leads me to believe that I can probably cut some vents in my helmet without significantly weakening the helmet. So I think I'm going to give it a try, I'll post pictures if anyone is interested. Thanks for the feedback

Quick helmet ventilation idea: unbutton your jacket collar. If your neck is cold, your head won't be hot!
