AI was a legend.
Apparently only about 1% of people with dengue fever actually die. I think it's fishy that a "world class athlete" would die from this. A couple of sources are citing that methadone use is under investigation. I hope we don't find he OD'd...

Dude had a lot of personal demons so it's certainly possible. Even more tragic if it's true.

Let's not malign the dude too fast, eh? My wife is a prof. in this stuff and she tells me that any such drugs involved could've easily been involved in pain management - for the virus, or not. And if you've ever been on serious pain meds, you know it would not be hard to get off schedule, real fast.

AI was something else. 3 years ago, or so, was surfing my families favorite beach, NE corner of Kauai, when he and his brother showed up. Just sat back and watched: was hands down the smoothest and cleanest I've ever seen. Just beautiful to watch - on another plane altogether.

Been thinking a lot about that day today.

Yeah, i just read something on web md, that the pain associated with this can be excrutiating and he could have been self medicating to rid himself of joint/muscle pain.
So sad, i really cant believe this guy is dead.
I remember watching him on live streaming at the eddi a. last winter, he caught the inside resurge and was in the green room and then the wave just crushed him.

For the record puhisurfer, I was not trying to malign AI, I was merely stating a fact that the death was under investigation.

I just about cried when he won Tahiti because his passion was so evident. Big fan.

I'm not "maligning" the dude either, but you don't start off with a drug like methadone to control pain. You basically have two uses for the drug; chronic pain, and heroin addction. It would be really easy to "get off schedule" if you started taking it in the first place. I'm not saying this influences the impact of his death in any way. He's a world class athlete, and surfs like one. As a person that spends time with addicts every day, I want to say that I've never seen him behave like an addict. Jesus, look at Flea.

This is sad because a world class athlete just died. He has a wife and a kid on the way. Let's just focus on the actual loss, and not the media speculation.

A few years ago, I decided that I wanted to try surfing, but only after seeing Andy surf. The loss of so many influential and inspriational athletes is getting tougher.

No matter how he passed, I'm glad I was able to witness his pure talent.
