    Someone out to snag those...

I spotted a thread in Ski Swap recently where laseranimal exhorted irul to buy some cheap Explosiv2s with the line "Someone ought to snag these just to have em."

    That rung a bell.

I recently bought a pair of Ramer self arrest poles merely because I'd always wanted some. I might never use them because I already have a decent set of poles and don't fancy disembowelling myself on the Ramer picks during a beater but I wanted to snag 'em just to have 'em. The amount of never drilled skis sold here suggests to me that I'm not alone so lets have it out in the open, gear sluts.

What ski gear have you bought that you never needed and never even used?

    Avalung.

Bought for cheap in Sierra Trading post, the only action it's seen is the back of my closet.

A mini air horn. It's super loud and it's the coolest thing--scares the shiz out of our cats. But, yeah, I bought it for skiing and never used it.

I've got at least 5 pairs of Smith sunglasses. Why the hell do I need kiwi green sunglasses?

1984 223 Atomic DH Red Sleds. $75. Mounted 'em and skied them two mornings. They now serve as decoration behind the bar (but still skiable).

I just bought a pair of Look Z race bindings. I have no skis to mount them on. Which means I have to buy another pair of skis. And then I bought a pair of Solly 900s. They were cheap I couldnt help myself. Now I have to buy ANOTHER pair of skis. Damn you skiing obsession. I need snow so I stop buying things.

Air horns are great for telemarketers too.

    Great topic.

In high school, when I was racing and skiing 3 or 4 times a week, I had all sorts of stuff I really didn't need. My mom bought me a marmot alpinist coat because they were cool and I "spent so much time on the mountain." Same goes with north face bib pants that I wore over my DH suit on race days. I had great racing equipment, too, but I used that stuff.

Basically it's funny because now that I actually need things like marmot alpinist coats and the like, I can't afford 'em!

Thank god for people like Optics and Gorillo, hookin' up the mags.

A pair of Fritschi freerides, some colltex skins and a pair of AT sticks. Used once to access 2000 vertical feet of untracked breakable crust.

217 RD Valdez Extreme racestock SuperG boards. Mounted with Rossi FKS. Got whole setup for about 100 bucks. Used them once at Blackjack in Upper Michigan. Rode 'em in the pipe even. I still keep them around. I'm gonna use them again someday.

i bought a split board with skins last winter. $120 bucks or something. never used it, but it sure would be cool if i did...

also bought 190 explosivs with s9-14 binders for $250 at the end of the season. considering i just picked skiing back up again last january, and will never ride skis on a powder day, the purchase may have been a bit frivolous...but they are so COOL and CHEAP (comparatively).

A perfect example of how this vicious cycle swallows so many obsessed skiers whole.

A pair of 190 G4s towards the end of last season. Wanted to add an alpine ski to what was then a tele-only quiver because I was injured. Tested them, bought them, realised I wasn't injured anymore, haven't used them since, always been on pain sticks. Might even consider selling them...
