Maybe better, maybe not, but the guitars for sure:
Debauchery - Angel of Death
I remember when I saw this for the first time. I didn't think of the timeline and the black and white video confused me. I was thinking "holy shit cream ripped off Ela Fitzgerald."
(Just went back through the entire thread and noticed that this had been posted 2× previously, so 3rd time's the charm!)
I am not saying better than, just radically different and therefore embodies what I believe a great cover should do...

Another one that, again, isn't better, just a great re-imagining...
Apparently I repeat myself when under duress...I posted this back when the thread started, but the video i linked was taken down.

Another in the "Not Better, Just Different, Thus Really Cool" category:
Neil Young covering BSF
saw Yes several times live and Squire always did this as his "obligatory" bass solo. Never knew that he had recorded it on an album, though
Treepeople out-Smiths the Smiths too:

I’ve expected to criticize and defend Radiohead in the same thread? I’m taking this over to the things that annoy me threads.
[QUOTE=dookey67;5413482]I am not saying better than, just radically different and therefore embodies what I believe a great cover should do...(Devo: Satisfaction)
These are the types I like (as far as covers)....Challenge is most songs worth covering are so good that the cover will never be as good as the original. That's why they've got to be changed up. Even if it's subtly different...
or (maybe not as radical as Devo's Satisfaction, maybe...)
Karl Wallinger, World Party, Long and Winding Road
Couldn't find this anywheres on the innertubes so I posted it up to youtube. I had this version on a variety cd I made for road trips. My kids grew up on it. It wasn't till last year that my kids discovered it was a cover. They think it is so weird to hear McCartney doing the original (doh!)
Everything Dirty Loops.. although the originals didn't set a very high bar..
Go that way really REALLY fast. If something gets in your way, TURN!
Better than Sabbath IMO. The album was yellow vinyl too.

Placebo’s cover of Where Is My Mind.
I love the Pixies, and I love the original version, but Placebo killed it on this one.
