It's disgusting to see a sport of leisure compare a perceived injustice within it's sport to mass genocide. Yep, comparing killing innocent men, women, and children on a mass scale to a ski mountain remaining a ski mountain is a valid one.

It's also disgusting that snowboarders don't give ski mountains the credit they deserve for being the infrastructure by which their new sport could hop onto without any costs. Fucking be respectful of the sport that already built everything all over the world so you could hop on.

To be honest, it seemed to me from reading his post that he was talking about himself, and most boarders he knew, not saying that those characteristics were absolutely universal.

What, are you guys implying Snowbird is any better? The feeling I had last season when I was denied entrance onto the tram with my Kayak is undescribable. Snow Kayaking is my release. When I'm Snow Kayaking I feel a connection to the mountains and mother Earth unlike anything I have ever experienced on a pair of skis or a snowboard. I grew up skiing and snowboarding, so I know what I'm talking about. After college I discovered Snow Kayaking and all the limitations of skiing and snowboarding just disappeared. When the tram op told me "no Kayaks allowed" I felt as if I had slipped back in time to 1943 Germany. The only other time in my life I have ever felt this way was about five years ago when I was thrown off of Pebble Beach golf course for playing disc golf on it. Such B.S.!

Anyways, here's a little vid of my bros last season in Europe just to try to add some stoke to this thread.

This debate's been going on since the big Remarq, Deja, and R.S.A. ski forums of the 90's (Fiddler remembers those BB's because that's how he and I first met).

I'll go ahead and post here what I used to post back then, because not a lot of people seem to know this; Alta's 'been there and done' the snowboarder thing 36 years ago. Alta was actually the first ski area in the entire western U.S. to allow snowboarding, way back in 1975.

One of my little brothers used to make snowboards in our basement for his friends. When Alta opened up to riders in '75, he couldn't even keep up with the demand for his homemade boards. He thought he'd found his future. But, guess what--the traverse issues became such a problem that Alta decided to close to boarders at the end of that season. Unfortunately, my brother had thought demand would continue and had invested in all kinds of material and presses, in addition to expensive glues and resins. Alta's decision literally left no place for boarders to ride that following season. My brother got his butt handed to him in his little snowboard business.

If you've ever wondered why Alta is so completely closed to the boarder idea, it's because they already played that game and they know what will happen. By the way, if you want proof of what happens, look at the Bookends traverse at the Bird. You don't see pro riders or even good riders slogging it because they hate it. Ask 'em. They'll tell you it's "too long, too difficult, not worth it," and so on. They'll give you all kinds of reasons. In fact, the boarders you see on BE traverse are generally the ones trying it for the first time. They see all the skiers heading there for the pow and want to get some. But, it doesn't take too many minutes of hiking to change their mind. Most bail at about the "point" area where, thankfully, the vert is so short it doesn't mess up the goods for the rest of us.

I snowboarded until I switched completely over to skiing in '02. I know how sucky long traverses can be. Of the hundreds of BE laps I've done, I've only seen a handful of boarders actually stick with the traverse past the hilary gate. Since some of Alta's traverses are longer than BET, one can clearly see the problem it would cause.

Alta wants to make money. If that '75 season hadn't revealed numerous problems, they'd still be open to boarders.

Yeah, 'cause in 1975 snowboarding was a very mature sport and the gear had all the kinks worked out...

Alta was also going to allow snowboarding (again) until they were able to broker a last minute deal for the Alta/Bird pass.

Man i wish they would open it for boarders just one more year so all you fools that think its because we dont want you there will understand. THE TRAVERSES WOULD SUCK ON A SNOWBAORD..then Alta would get a bad rap cause snowboarders would post all over the intewrwebs how the terrain isnt that good. Well its great but if you can't get to it...it would suck skiing Mambo all day.

Its so pointless to continue bickering about Alta not allowing boarders. It's not going to change, there are 3 other great resorts within a mile and a half of alta, not to mention incredible BC opportunities all around the resort, just don't worry about it. Hike it in the early season and late season after its closed. With that said, I can't fuggin' wait to move into Alta next week!
