Tons of sugar today around the corner from 90s, higher, in the rocky gnar (Lobster Claw area?). I was even sidestepping knee deep straight to rock in places, just getting out of the zone.

    Here's what I'm talking about:

Pass was nice yesterday am. Timing worked out great as the clouds vanished and the sun broke out just as I was gearing up.

Today was way better than I'd expected. Moderate temps, wind wasn't totally nukular and the storm snow has held well on most aspects.

Dug a NE facing pit on 30* pitch at the top of the 90s which verified my concern about tricky layers in the new storm snow. Had three distinct Q2 shears in the top 18". Underneath that you'll find a mix of facets and mostly good consolidation-- you know, typical Berthoud pack. Lower down in the trees deep slab releases and isothermal snow are definitely still a concern.

Now that the CAIC is on a skeleton crew, it's up to us to be vigilant and share our own obs. Coverage is better than I've ever seen it. It's fkn plastered right now and we've got EASILY a month of rad turns left up there. Stay alert and git sum.

BP skied great today and I was surprised to see as much sun as we did. Only skied north-facing stuff (Russell, XYZ, Corner Pocket, Chimney), but there was about 4" of fresh on top of what felt like a fast, dense surface. It was relatively calm until we were feet away from dropping into CP, then the winds started gusting over 40 for a good period of time. Found 8" of uncohesive blower snow in Chimney. Lots of point releases off cornices and rocks. Saw a good sized fracture off No Name proper early in the day that was gone by 3pm.

Looks like I'll be up solo tomorrow. Likely just a day of exploring and mellow skiing for me unless I end up with some partners. Black 4runner repping TGR on the back window, red jacket, grizzlecorns. Say hey.

Drove up to WP today. The pass looked really good. Should be lots of fresh available for tomorrow as well.

Related: saw a bunch of EMS at the bottom of the Winter Park side of the pass around 1245. Hope everyone's ok out there.

Hmm. I guess I was sorta hoping for more useful field observations than that. But yeah, hope everyone's okay and stuff.

Today was another winner. The storm snow from the last 24 hrs is sloughing in some places and bonding well in others. We skied a range of aspects this morning through a mix of variable conditions, but the real red flag is a super slick crust that developed sometime this weekend (probably yesterday?) about 10-14" down on most aspects reaching well below treeline.

We experienced some whumpfing on low angle, south facing terrain below treeline. Things are very punchy through the trees and really wet. Several big dense slabs mixed with facets lurk in the top 40" or so. Ran a CT and two PST's on a southeast facing pit at 30*. Both PSTs arrested within the slab at greater than 50% of the cut. No surprises but again, if these slabs do release deep there is a high potential for them to climax, which at the very least, would ruin your day.

Tomorrow will be another good day. Just be aware of variable conditions and manage your terrain choices well. I still can't get over how awesomely deep and buttery it is up there.

yesterday was fun until noon. 80s and 90s were thick, but skiing well. went over to floral and had the same experience as pinner. top foot was wet and slid off of a crusty layer at almost every slope angle. made for sketchy turns. if it had stayed cold it would've been awesome, but 2+ hours of real warm temps fucked it all up.

Don't get me wrong, the top 6-8" are dry, light and fkna awesome right now and should be tomorrow too. Just be aware that top foot that was wet yesterday was frozen and buried overnight and now is slicker than Rick.

But that's okay because by Wednesday it'll be melty and wet again, just how you like it.

EDIT: Forgot to add this gem:

    "He ain't making that turn."
    "Nope."
    "There he goes."
    "Stuck."
    "Yep. Pretty much."
"He's gonna be there for hours."
    "Think we should help?"
"Bwaaahahahaha! Get in the car, loser."

Was up from 10:30 to 2:30 for a few laps and some fresh air, got super-warm. No sign of slide activity, couple of nice lines got skied.

Watched a dude take a nice 1,000' slide down Russell this morning. Wasn't buried, regained his balance and skied it out. Didn't see skiers in it after that. Duh.

Pair of tracks on Stanley too. Strong work, right there.

Thoughts on skiing BP tomrrow? I have some free time in the morning but I don't want to bother if it's all cooked already. Anyone know if it stayed cool and overcast enough this afternoon to preserve some fresh for the morning?

Today was another ridiculous day of steep and deep. Stayed cold and grey all day.

Get it early tomorrow. Once the sun comes out, all bets are off.

    ^^^^Seconded.

BP was 4-stars at 8pm when I left. Temp was droping and the snow was super light. West side skied great and nobody was out. SO much snow. If I wasn't commited tomorrow morning, I'd be out early before it gets manky.

BP delivered the goods today. Plenty of fresh snow and hardly anyone around. I felt like I had won the lottery this morning.
