Silverton Mountain Looking for Generator Help

We are trying to find a used big generator set for an additional source of emergency power on the chairlift. Would like to make ourselves self contained so we can run the lift through any deep snow caused power outages, with the goal of offering interlodge skiing someday. Need approx 250 KVA, 480 volt generator set that runs well. Still want to install for this season, especially if big storms keep coming. Will trade for skiing or combine with skiing for affordable price. Any help appreciated!-Aaron

Sorry, I was kidding. The 3 that I was talking about are rentals that they are using since their fire.

I've got lots of repo trucks, but no class 1 license. It can't be that hard to learn to drive one of those bad boys, can it?

Still, maybe it would provide a lead on a source for procuring said Genny...

    caterpillar..

after the 'energy-crisis' here in cali...you know, the one that never happened...caterpillar power systems has hundreds of low-hour gen-sets waiting for a buyer..at a HUGE discount. All completely enclosed in weather-proof enclosures, fully self-contained, sound attenuated blah-blah-blah-blah-blah...you get the point.

We just purchased a 2MW unit for REAL CHEAP. So I'd give the nearest cat-dealer a ring, or detriot-desiel, or Kohler for that matter.
I have mastered all major sporting activities to a high degree of mediocrity.

I'm a generator jong and I have no idea if these prices are considered "affordable" to you but I did find these. And I'm assuming you want disel or gas as electric wouldn't help you in a power outage...

I guess I should have stated what affordable is in my reality. Most good generators are about $19,000 and up. My budget for this is barely $5,000 on a good day ,or below. That is why I hope to be able to trade for part or most of the price. I figure it can't hurt to put out the word and see if a skiing starved, generator owning, individual comes out of the woodwork.

here's one with no motor for only $1,300. Probably not exactly what you were looking for.

Farmers use a generator that's driven off the tractor PTO. It's cheaper than an entire motor-generator set. If you have a suitable vehicle with a PTO that might be a way to go for emergency power.

Idris/Tom (here on the board) is a ski-bum/electrical engineer/scrounger. I'm sure he could cobble something together out of an old Ford truck and some electrical motors.

Driving a Class 8 truck is easy just look at all the hicks behind the wheel. The cost of operating one is the bitch.

Another possible source of generators -- military surplus auctions.

And the best part of this deal is should California suffer another electricity crisis, you can sell them your surplus power at 100X the market rate.

    Aaron,

Out of curiosity, would you be willing to rent a generator for the season rather than purchasing one?

Let me know as I might have a few leads for you.

Also, I need more specifics for the amount of output you would need if this is an option.

I would be interested in rentals as well. Looked into rentals locally, but price was way too high. Output of 250kva is what we are looking for. Bigger is ok also. 480 volt 3 phase with transfer switch preferably. Nothing fancy needed.

This genny would work I think...you just need a V8 diesel truck motor and gearbox, hook the propshaft up to the input of the genny and adjust the idle screw until you get the right rpm and your good to go....this is esencially how most of the Kiwi ski tows operate.......sorry I am stuck in Banff with a bad back (from teaching snowboading) so I'm not much help.
