    Edge Bevel q

Tognar's catalog is telling me that I should have my sugardaddies at 1* base and 3* side, and my older v-pro's at 1* base 2* side. does atomic really do all their skis from the factory with that much bevel? i guess i'm generally just wondering if i should really follow these guidelines when i tune...

also, how far back from tip/tail should i detune? thanks

3 degrees of bevel seems like a hell of a lot for a powder ski. For a race ski, I could see that, but not a fat ski.

It's a personal preference usually both in regards to bevel and detuning. 3:1 does seem a bit harsh for free riding though. Generally, detune to the contact points. Detune further as you see fit. The more you detune the tip, the harder it'll be to innitiate a turn. The more you detune the tail, the easier it will be to skid the tail.

ALL ATOMICS ARE 1 DEGREE BASE AND 3 DEGREE SIDE. It's the way they come out of the factory. You could try to change it, but you'd have to grind down a hell of a lot of edge to bring that bevel to 1 degree on the bottom. This would be furtherly fucked by the fact that Atomics cannot be ground flat. Atomic claims the ski is concave on purpose and is intended to work that way, which is a basically a shit excuse for the fact they can't manufacture a flat based ski with the whole beta tech junk they use. Not to say atomics are bad, they're just not flat and never will be. I would just stick with the 1 and 3, thats what any good shop will tune your atomics to.

    Bossass is money.
That's they way they ship them and that's the way I would keep it.

As mentioned, to change it, your going to be taking a good bit of life out of the edge to get it down to a 2. If anything keep it the same but detune lightly with a gummi maybe 2-3" back from contact points.

Agreed on the Atomic bases the new ones aren't as bad as the olds, but with the exception of their real race room skis that have a squared beta buildup, the skis are ALL virtually concave.

...and if you try to tune an Atomic flat it will wander all over the place. P O S! That 3 degree side edge bevel also makes them quite brittle. It's funny though, the new Dynamic skis come out of the same factory and come through flat and with a more conventional 1 or 2 on the side and are a piece of cake to tune.

Don't detune most modern skis more than 1 inch past contact point tip and tail (snowboards too).
